If you are a pool owner, you should take special measures to keep your pool waters clean, clear, and healthy for swimming. One step is to install a pool cartridge filter. These filters, like most machines, need proper maintenance if you want them to function efficiently and last you longer. To keep your pool filter cartridge in top shape, it need to be cleaned regularly.
The process is much more labor-intensive than simply backwashing your pool filter, but it can be broken down into simpler steps.
How To Clean Your Pool Filter Cartridge?
Here is how you can clean your pool cartridge filter step by step:
1. Switch Off the Pool Pump
Start by first switching off your pool pump. Any maintenance or pool work should only be done after your pool is switched off to avoid any accidents. You should also remove the air inside the filter tank by turning the air relief valve. If you open the filter while air pressure is built inside, it may damage your filter.
2. Open the Filter Tank and Remove the Cartridge
Next, open up the filter and remove the inner cartridge. Most filters have an O-ring in place that will need to be removed first. If you are unsure how to remove this, refer to the owner's manual. Inside the filter, you will see either a single cartridge or multiple cartridges that can be lifted outside the tank.
3. Inspect the Cartridge for Damage
Now, you should carefully inspect the cartridges for any damage or signs of wear and tear. It is a good habit to do a visual checkup because there is always a chance that your cartridge needs to be replaced entirely rather than cleaned.
4. Clean Using Water
Next, you can start with basic cleaning using water. Use a garden hose to rinse the entirety of your cartridge to dislodge any debris or dirt on its surface. Always work from the top to bottom of the cartridge. You should avoid power washing your cartridges as this may damage the mesh fabric or pleats of the cartridge. You can also use cartridge filter cleaners to disclose dirt from the filter.
5. Deep Cleaning Overnight
Dirt and debris isn’t the only thing that covers your filter. It may also have a layer of grease, algae, sunscreen, body oils, and other contaminants that can only be removed with a deep cleaning.
For this, you must leave the cartridge submerged overnight in a mix of water and cartridge cleaner. The next day, rinse off with a hose again to remove all contaminants.
6. Insert Cartridge inside Filter Tank
Now that your cartridge is clean, carefully place it back into the filter tank and secure it. Reinstall the O-ring in place and switch off the air release valve. Finally, switch on your swimming pool pump again, and you are all done.
Final Thoughts
As a rule of thumb, your cartridge pool filter must be carefully cleaned at least once every 3 months, or earlier if needed. By following the simple steps we have outlined above, you can keep your pool filter working its best year-round!
