If you want to keep your pool waters looking clear and clean, you should invest in the right tools. Using chlorine and sanitizers to keep bacteria and microbes away isn’t enough; you must also clear away the contaminants and debris that accumulate in your water over time.

Leaving the debris floating in the water for too long can give it a cloudy appearance, taking away the beauty of your pool. Installing a pool sand filter is one of the best approaches to counter these contaminants.

How Does A Pool Sand Filter Work?

There are many types of pool filters, but sand filters are considered one of the most popular and most effective choices. Pool sand filters consist of a mechanism that uses sand to catch any dirt and debris floating around in your water, leaving it clean and pure before directing it back to your pool.

Structure of A Pool Sand Filter

1. Structure of A Pool Sand Filter

To better understand how pool sand filters work, you should first understand the anatomy of a sand filter. Usually, a compact sand filter will have an entrance at the top of the tank where the contaminated water will enter. The salt filler will include a pump that can carry unfiltered water in and clean water out after purification.

Inside the tank will be the pool filter itself made of sand. Most sand filters will use a mix of sand or silica to form the inner filter.  Roughly 70% of the tank carries sand whereas the rest is free air. The exact amount of sand present will depend on the size of your pool and the corresponding sand filter.

For instance, this residential sand filter would be appropriate if you have a residential pool. If you have a larger commercial pool, this commercial sand filter would be the right choice.

2. Filter Pool Water

Now, let's see how water is actually filtered through the sand pool filter. First, water is pumped through the top into the tank of the pool sand filter. The water will be sprayed inside over the sand present. It is like a sprinkler or fountain spraying water over the surface of the sand. The water will flow through the sand slowly. The sand particles will then trap any pieces of debris or other contaminants that are polluting the water.

3. Rerouting Water Back

Once your water passes through the filtering sand, it will be collected at the bottom of the tank. From here, it will be carried once again by your pool filter pump to the exterior back into the pool. Any particles that the sand has trapped will go on to form a cakey layer on top of the sand.

If you notice the pressure reading on your pool sand filter has fallen, it means the cakey layer has become too hard for water to pass through efficiently. You will have to backwash your sand pool filter to dislodge this sand once again. Moreover, you will have to replace the sand in your filters at least once every 3-5 years.

Final Thoughts!

Pool sand filters are incredibly efficient and reliable at keeping your pools clean and clear of contaminants. Now that you know how pool sand filters work, you are better positioned to purchase one for your domestic or commercial pools!
