What Type of Sand Should You Put in Your Pool Filter?

If you own a pool, one of the most important maintenance tasks you will need to do regularly is to clean the filter. All swimming pools use filters to help keep the water clean and clear. A pool filter traps dirt and debris that would otherwise be floating around in the pool water, which can cause a variety of problems. One common question pool owners ask is, what sand should you put in your pool filter? In this article, we’ll explore this topic and answer some questions you may have.

Why Use Sand in a Pool Filter?

Before we delve into the types of sand you can use in your pool filter, let’s first discuss why sand is even used in a pool filter. Pool filters use a process called “backwashing” to rid the filter of dirt and debris that it has trapped. During this process, water flows backwards through the filter and causes the trapped dirt and debris to be forced out. This process only works efficiently, though, when there is something in the filter to catch and hold the dirt in the first place, and that’s where the sand comes in.

Types of Sand You Can Use in Your Pool Filter

There are generally two types of sand used in pool filters: silica sand and zeolite sand. Let’s take a look at each.

Silica Sand

Silica sand is the most commonly used type of sand in pool filters. It is the cheapest option and readily available at most pool supply stores. Silica sand is mined from sandstone and quartz deposits and is sold in different grain sizes. The size of the grain determines the efficiency of the filter: the smaller the grain, the better the filter will function. It’s important to note that you should never use play sand or any other type of sand that is not specifically designed for pool filters.

Zeolite Sand

Zeolite sand is a newer type of pool filter sand that is made from natural volcanic rock. This type of sand has a higher filtration capacity than traditional silica sand and is also much lighter in weight. The lighter weight means that less water is required during the backwashing process, which can save you money on your water bill. Another benefit of using zeolite sand is that it can help reduce chloramine levels in the pool, which can reduce eye irritation and an unpleasant smell.

How Much Sand Do You Need for Your Pool Filter?

The amount of sand you need for your pool filter will depend on the size of your filter. For most standard pool filters, you will need between 100 and 200 pounds of sand. If you’re unsure how much sand you need, consult your pool manufacturer’s guidelines.

How Often Should You Replace Your Pool Filter Sand?

You should replace the sand in your pool filter every 3-5 years. Over time, the sand will become clogged with dirt and debris, which can reduce its efficiency at catching new dirt particles. When it’s time to replace the sand, be sure to follow all safety precautions as silica dust can be harmful if inhaled.

In conclusion, the type of sand you use in your pool filter is important for its efficiency and effectiveness in keeping your pool water clean and clear. Silica sand is the most commonly used type of sand in pool filters, but zeolite sand can be a more efficient option. Always use sand that is specifically designed for pool filters, and remember to replace the sand every 3-5 years to ensure its effectiveness.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
