what causes pool filter pressure to rise

Author: PoolKing - Pool Sand Filter Manufacturers

Pool filters are an essential component of any backyard oasis. They remove debris, bacteria, and other contaminants, keeping the water safe and clean for swimmers. However, it's not uncommon to notice a rise in pressure within the pool filter. What causes this pressure to increase, and what can be done to alleviate the problem? Below are five key factors that contribute to a rise in pool filter pressure and tips on how to address them.

1. Clogged or Dirty Filter Media

The most common cause of a sudden rise in pool filter pressure is a clogged or dirty filter. As the filter media traps debris, such as leaves and dirt, it begins to accumulate and restrict water flow. As a result, the pressure gauge on the filter tank will show an increase in pressure. To address this issue, the filter media should be cleaned or replaced as necessary. Pool filters typically use sand, cartridge, or DE (diatomaceous earth) media.

For sand filters, backwashing is the most common method for removing trapped debris. Backwashing involves reversing the water flow through the filter, flushing out the debris from the drain port. Cartridge filters can be removed and hosed off with a high-pressure nozzle to remove debris. DE filters require a more involved cleaning process, which includes removing the filter grids, hosing them off, and adding fresh DE powder.

2. Algae Growth

Algae growth is another common cause of an increase in pressure within the pool filter. Algae can quickly grow on the filter media, causing it to clog and restrict water flow. Algae growth is often the result of inadequate sanitization, lack of circulation or filtration, or unbalanced pH and alkalinity levels.

To prevent algae growth, pool owners should maintain proper sanitization levels, regularly test and balance pH and alkalinity levels, and ensure adequate water circulation and filtration. If algae growth is already present, shock treatment and algaecide may be necessary to eliminate the problem.

3. Pump Problems

The pool pump is responsible for moving water through the pool filter, and any issues with the pump can result in a rise in pressure within the filter. A malfunctioning pump motor or clogged impeller can restrict water flow and lead to a pressure increase.

To address pump issues, pool owners should check for any visible signs of damage or clogs in the impeller or other pump components. If the motor is not functioning correctly, a professional should be called to diagnose and repair the problem.

4. Improper Backwashing Technique

Improper backwashing techniques can also contribute to a sudden rise in pool filter pressure. Backwashing duration and frequency can impact the efficiency of the filter, leading to clogs and pressure increases.

Pool owners should be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommended backwashing frequency and duration, which differ by filter type. Cartridge filters should be removed and cleaned at least once a season, while sand filters should be backwashed once the pressure gauge indicates a 7-10 psi increase above the clean pressure. DE filters should be backwashed after each cleaning to ensure proper flow.

5. Inadequate Pool Maintenance

Lastly, a lack of regular pool maintenance can contribute to a sudden rise in pressure within the pool filter. Failure to clean the skimmer basket, pump basket or pool strainer basket regularly can lead to debris buildup, causing the filter to work harder, and pressure to increase.

To prevent inadequate pool maintenance issues, pool owners should perform routine skimming, brushing, and vacuuming of the pool and clean the skimmer, pump and pool strainer baskets weekly. This helps to prevent buildup of debris and the subsequent rise in filter pressure.

In summary, there are several factors that can cause a sudden rise in pressure within a pool filter, including clogged or dirty filter media, algae growth, pump problems, improper backwashing technique, and inadequate pool maintenance. By maintaining proper pool care techniques and promptly addressing any issues that arise, pool owners can prevent a sudden increase in filter pressure, ensuring safe and enjoyable swimming all season long.
