How to Flush a Pool Filter

If you want to keep your pool sparkling clean and clear of debris, it’s essential to maintain your pool filter regularly. Over time, your pool filter will accumulate dirt, grime, and other unwanted particles that will cause the filter to clog and reduce its efficiency. To keep the filter in its optimal state, you need to flush it regularly.

In this article, we’ll show you how to flush a pool filter easily and quickly. We’ll provide you with step-by-step instructions and tips to make the process smooth and stress-free.

Understand the Different Types of Pool Filters

Before we proceed with the flushing process, it’s good to understand the various types of pool filters available.

- Sand Filters – These use sand to trap debris and dirt, and the sand requires backwashing to flush out the accumulated debris.

- Cartridge Filters – These use paper, fabric, or pleated material to trap debris, and the cartridge requires replacement after a specific period.

- Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters – These use powdery DE material to trap debris, which requires backwashing to flush the accumulated dirt.

Each type of pool filter has its cleaning process that requires different procedures, and this article will detail the procedures for each filter type.

Begin the Flushing Process

To begin the process, turn off the pool pump and switch off the pool heater if you have one. Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary items, including protective gloves and goggles.

Flush a Sand Filter

If you have a sand filter, proceed with the following steps:

Step 1: Locate the Multiport Valve – This valve is usually located near the pool pump or sand filter. Turn it to the backwash position.

Step 2: Turn on the Pump – Turn on the pump and let it run for about two minutes, or until the water from the backwash hose appears clear.

Step 3: Rinse the Filter – Turn the multiport valve to the rinse position and run the pump for about 30 seconds.

Step 4: Resettle the Sand – Turn off the pump and place the multiport valve to the filter position. Allow the filter to run for at least a minute to resettle the sand.

Flush a Cartridge Filter

If you have a cartridge filter, follow these steps:

Step 1: Remove the Cartridge – Turn off the pump and unscrew the cartridge housing. Remove the cartridge.

Step 2: Rinse the Cartridge – Use a garden hose to clean the cartridge thoroughly. Remove all debris and dirt from the crevices.

Step 3: Soak the Cartridge – Soak the cartridge in a bucket filled with a filter cleaning solution for at least two hours.

Step 4: Rinse the Cartridge Again – Rinse the cartridge again using the garden hose and replace it in the cartridge housing.

Flush a DE Filter

If you have a DE filter, follow these steps:

Step 1: Shut Off the Pump – Turn off the pump and remove the backwash plug from the waste line.

Step 2: Add DE Powder – Fill the skimmer with DE powder equal to the recommended amount in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 3: Flush the Filter – Turn on the pump and let it run for about two minutes. Watch for the dirty water to come out of the waste line.

Step 4: Rinse the Filter – Turn off the pump, and place the multiport valve to the rinse position. Let the pump run for 30 seconds and then turn off the pump.

Step 5: Refill the DE Powder – Open the filter’s air relief valve and, using a funnel, add more DE powder through the skimmer.

Final Thoughts

Flushing your pool filter regularly is essential to keep your pool clean and safe. Sand filters should be backwashed once a week, cartridge filters should be cleaned every four to six weeks, and DE filters should be backwashed once a month.

Follow the above steps on how to flush your pool filter to ensure your pool functions at its best. Remember to wear protective gear, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your filter type. Happy swimming!

----Yes, they can. Silica sand is mainly used for filtration, while activated carbon is mainly used for adsorption. Silica sand is effective for higher water quality requirements. When use them together, silica sand should be placed on the bottom layer, and then activated carbon should be filled on the sand, but the cost of using two media is much higher.
