how does a salt pool filter work

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

If you're considering a saltwater pool system, it's important to understand how it works. In this article, we'll delve into the details of a salt pool filter and how it cleans your water. We'll discuss the benefits of using a saltwater system, how it differs from traditional chlorine pools, and what maintenance is required.

Benefits of a Saltwater Pool

Saltwater pools offer several advantages over traditional chlorine pools. They use a process called electrolysis to generate chlorine from salt, which means fewer harsh chemicals are needed to maintain the water. This results in a more natural swimming experience that's gentle on skin and eyes.

Saltwater systems also offer better water quality that's free of impurities, such as calcium and metals. They eliminate the need to handle and store hazardous chemicals, and they require less maintenance. In some cases, the initial cost of a saltwater system may be higher than a traditional pool, but it offers significant long-term savings.

How a Salt Pool Filter Works

Salt pool filters work in conjunction with the salt cell to maintain water quality. The filter removes debris such as dirt and leaves from the pool, while the salt cell converts salt into chlorine to sanitize the water. As the water flows through the salt cell, it undergoes electrolysis, which splits the salt molecules into sodium and chlorine.

The chlorine then oxidizes bacteria, algae, and other contaminants in the water. After the chlorine is used up, it turns back into salt, and the process starts again. The result is a continual cycle that ensures the water stays clean and free of harmful bacteria.

Types of Salt Pool Filters

There are three main types of salt pool filters: sand, cartridge, and DE (diatomaceous earth). Sand filters use a layer of sand to trap debris and contaminants. Cartridge filters use a paper or fabric cartridge to capture debris. DE filters use a fine powder made from the fossilized remains of diatoms to trap particles.

Each filter type has its advantages and disadvantages depending on your needs. Sand filters are the most affordable but require backwashing to remove trapped debris. Cartridge filters are low-maintenance and easy to clean but may need to be replaced more frequently. DE filters offer the best filtration but can be more challenging to maintain.

Maintaining a Saltwater Pool

Maintenance for a saltwater pool is relatively simple compared to a traditional chlorine pool. However, there are still important steps that need to be taken to ensure the water stays clean and clear.

Monitor Salt Levels

Salt levels should be tested regularly to ensure the right amount is present in the water. Too little salt can prevent the cell from producing enough chlorine, while too much salt can damage the pool equipment.

Check pH Levels

pH levels should also be monitored and adjusted accordingly. The recommended range is between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH level is too high or too low, it can cause skin irritation, corrosion, or scaling in the pool.

Inspect the Salt Cell

The salt cell needs to be inspected and cleaned regularly to ensure proper function. Calcium buildup and other debris can accumulate in the cell, which can cause reduced chlorine production.

Backwash or Clean the Filter

Finally, the filter needs to be backwashed or cleaned depending on the type of filter. This removes debris that's been trapped and ensures proper water flow.

Conclusion

A salt pool filter is a vital component of a saltwater pool system. It works alongside the salt cell to keep the water clean and free of contaminants. Understanding how it works and how to maintain it can help ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience. With proper care, a saltwater pool can offer years of hassle-free enjoyment, making it an excellent choice for any homeowner.

After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
11. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump . Switch on the electric heater if any .
