How to Change Sand in a Pool Filter
Pools are a great addition to any home, providing both relaxation and entertainment for the family. However, owning a pool requires maintenance to keep it functioning properly. One important aspect of pool maintenance is ensuring the pool filter is clean and effective. Over time, the sand in the pool filter can become dirty and clogged, reducing its ability to filter the pool water. In this article, we will go over the steps on how to change sand in a pool filter.
Supplies Needed
Before getting started, you will need to gather the necessary supplies. This includes:
- New filter sand
- Pool filter sand cleaner
- Screwdriver or wrench
- Shop vacuum
- Gloves
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Turn off the Pool Pump
The first step is to turn off the pool pump to prevent any accidents or injuries. It’s important to wait until the water in the pool is still and not agitated before proceeding with the next steps.
Step 2: Locate the Pool Filter
Locate the pool filter and determine what type of filter it is. The most common type of pool filter is a sand filter, which has a large cylindrical tank filled with sand. Other types of pool filters include diatomaceous earth (DE) and cartridge filters.
Step 3: Drain the Filter
Drain the water out of the filter by turning the valve to the “backwash” position. This will allow the water to drain out of the filter and into the pool’s waste line.
Step 4: Remove the Filter Head
After draining the filter, remove the filter head by using a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the bolts that hold it in place. Be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses when handling the filter head, as it may be dirty or greasy.
Step 5: Clean the Filter
Using a pool filter sand cleaner, clean the sand filter by pouring the cleaner into the filter and letting it sit for several hours. The cleaner will loosen any built-up dirt or grime that has accumulated in the filter. Once the filter has been cleaned, use a shop vacuum to remove any dirt or debris.
Step 6: Replace the Filter Sand
After cleaning the filter, it’s time to replace the filter sand. Remove the old sand by carefully scooping it out of the filter tank using a cup or small bucket. Once all of the old sand has been removed, carefully pour the new sand into the filter tank making sure not to overfill it.
Step 7: Reattach the Filter Head
Once the new sand has been added, reattach the filter head by tightening the bolts with a screwdriver or wrench. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to properly tighten the bolts to prevent damage to the filter head.
Step 8: Prime the Filter
Before turning the pool pump back on, prime the filter by filling the filter tank with water until it’s about halfway full. This will prevent the filter from running dry and causing damage to the pump.
Step 9: Turn on the Pool Pump
Finally, turn on the pool pump and switch the valve back to the “filter” position. Allow the pump to run for several minutes to ensure that the filter is functioning properly.
Conclusion
Changing the sand in a pool filter is an important part of pool maintenance. It’s recommended that the sand filter should be changed every 3-5 years to maintain proper filtration. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your pool stays clean and refreshing for years to come.
