when to recirculate a pool filter

When to Recirculate a Pool Filter

As a pool owner, you know how crucial it is to keep your pool clean and safe for everyone's use. One of the essential parts of pool maintenance is the pool filter. It is responsible for removing dirt, debris, and other contaminants from your pool water to keep it crystal clear. However, there might be times when the pool filter needs some extra attention, like recirculating the water. In this article, we'll discuss when to recirculate a pool filter and how to do it.

What is Recirculating a Pool Filter?

Recirculating a pool filter is the process of reversing the water flow in the pool filter system. Instead of pulling water from the pool and cleaning it, recirculating redistributes the pool water back into the pool without cleaning it. This process can help mix the chemicals in the pool and adjust the pH level of the water.

When to Recirculate a Pool Filter?

1. When the Pool Water is Cloudy

Cloudy pool water means there's too much bacteria or algae growing in the pool water. Recirculating the pool filter will help mix the chemicals and distribute the chlorine evenly to kill the bacteria and algae.

2. After Adding Chemicals

After adding chemicals to your pool water, recirculate the pool filter for at least ten hours. This process helps distribute the chemicals evenly and speeds up the chemical reaction.

3. Before a Party or Large Event

If you're planning to host a pool party or a large event, recirculating the pool filter can help improve the clarity of the pool water after heavy usage. With so many people using the pool, there might be a lot of dirt and debris that has been brought into the water. By recirculating the pool filter, you can redistribute the pool water and remove the debris.

4. After a Rainfall

After a rainfall, especially if it's heavy, debris, dirt, and other pollutants might get into the pool water. Recirculating the pool filter can help remove the pollutions and improve the water clarity.

5. After Cleaning the Pool Filter

Cleaning the pool filter is essential to maintain the filtration performance. After cleaning the pool filter, recirculating the pool filter can help reduce the air pockets, and distribute the chemicals and chlorine evenly.

How to Recirculate a Pool Filter?

Recirculating your pool filter is a straightforward process. To do it, follow these simple steps:

1. Turn off the pool filter pump.

2. Turn the valve to the recirculate position.

3. Turn the pool filter pump back on.

4. Let the pool filter recirculate for at least ten hours or until the pool water is clear and free of debris.

5. Once you're done, turn off the pool filter pump, turn the valve back to the original position, and turn the pool filter pump back on.

Conclusion

Recirculating a pool filter is a simple way to improve the water clarity and mix the chemicals evenly. It's essential to recirculate the pool filter when the water is cloudy, after adding chemicals, before a party, after a rainfall, and after cleaning the pool filter. By following these guidelines, you can keep your pool water clean and safe for everyone's use.
