when to change the sand in pool filter

When to Change the Sand in Your Pool Filter

The pool filter is an important item that plays a vital role in ensuring your pool water is clean and clear for swimming. The filter helps to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants that can make the pool unhygienic.

One of the essential components of a pool filter is the sand. The sand serves as the primary filter media and needs to be checked and changed regularly. In this article, we will discuss when to change the sand in your pool filter.

What is a Pool Filter?

A pool filter is a device that is used to remove contaminants from the pool water. It is an essential item for pool maintenance and is usually installed in the pool pump room. There are three types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters.

Sand filters are the most common types of pool filters and are popular for their longevity and ease of maintenance. Water is passed through the sand which traps dirt and debris, and clean water is discharged back into the pool.

How Often Should You Change the Sand in Your Pool Filter?

The sand in your pool filter should be changed every five to seven years. However, the frequency of sand replacement depends on several factors such as the size of your pool, the frequency of use, and the amount of debris it collects.

To determine if your sand needs a replacement, conduct a simple test. Turn off the pool pump and remove the filter cap. Use a clean bucket to collect water from the valve port, and note the water level in the bucket. Turn the valve to the "backwash" position, and turn on the pump. Observe the water as it discharges from the drain. If the water is cloudy or contains sand particles, it indicates that your sand needs changing.

What Happens if You Don't Change the Sand?

If you don't change the sand in your pool filter, it will become clogged with contaminants and debris. A dirty sand filter will not be able to filter the water effectively, which leads to poor water quality, and can also cause the pump to run harder and shorter service life. This could result in damage that would require repair or replacement of the equipment.

On top of that, dirty sand can also breed harmful bacteria, which can pose a health hazard to swimmers.

How to Change the Sand in Your Pool Filter

1. Turn off the pool pump and disconnect the power supply.

2. Remove the filter cap and drain the water from the filter.

3. Remove the sand from the filter tank using a bucket or a scoop. Dispose of the old sand according to your local regulations.

4. Rinse the filter tank thoroughly with a high-pressure hose to remove any remaining sand or debris.

5. Add the new sand, ensuring you use the correct grade for your filter. Check the manufacturer's specifications.

6. Level the sand, and replace the filter cap.

7. Turn on the pump and run it for a minimum of two minutes.

8. Backwash the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions.

9. Check the sand level after backwashing to ensure it is at the correct height.

Conclusion

Changing the sand in your pool filter is essential for maintaining clean pool water and ensuring your pool equipment's longevity. Conduct a simple test at least once a year to check the sand's condition, and replace it every five to seven years. If you are not comfortable doing the sand change yourself, it is best to engage a professional pool maintenance service. Regular maintenance will keep your pool crystal clear and ready for swimming all year round.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
