what psi should my pool filter run at

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Introduction

Pool filters are essential components in swimming pools to keep the water clean and healthy for swimming. They work by removing impurities and debris from the water, ensuring that these contaminants do not cause allergies or illnesses in humans. One of the most important factors to consider when it comes to pool filters is the pressure they operate at. In this article, we will discuss in detail what PSI should your pool filter run at, and why.

Understanding Pool Filters

Before we start discussing the ideal pressure that your pool filter should run at, it is important to understand the three main types of pool filters available, and how they operate. They include:

1. Sand Filters: These filters use sand as the filtration medium. The water passes through the sand, which traps any impurities and debris.

2. Cartridge Filters: These filters use a pleated filter cartridge to remove contaminants from the water.

3. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters: These filters use a powder made from fossilized diatoms to filter debris from the water.

Regardless of the type of pool filter you have installed, they all require a certain level of pressure to operate efficiently.

What is Pool Filter Pressure?

Pool filter pressure refers to the amount of force required to push water through the filtration system. This pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Depending on your pool filter type and size, the recommended PSI range should be between 8 and 25 PSI.

The Importance of Maintaining Proper Pressure

Maintaining the correct PSI is crucial when it comes to the overall functioning of your filtration system. A filter that operates at a pressure lower than the recommended range will not remove contaminants properly, while one that operates at a higher pressure than the recommended range will excessively strain the filter and may cause damage to the system.

How to Determine Optimal Pressure for Your Pool Filter

To determine the optimal pressure for your pool filter, you will need a pressure gauge. The pressure gauge is usually located on the filtration system's pressure tank, and it should not be covered or painted over. When you are ready to check the pressure, switch off the pump and wait for the water to stop running in the filter system. Once it stops, find the gauge located on the filtration system tank and check the reading, which should be between 8 and 25 PSI.

What Happens If the PSI is Too High or Too Low?

If the PSI reading is too high, this is an indication that there is an obstruction in the system, most likely a dirty filter, impeding water flow. To lower the PSI level, backwash the filter to remove any debris or replace the filter if it is worn out.

If the PSI level is too low, it’s an indication that there is a leakage in your filtration system or the water flow is obstructed by an air leak. Check for any cracks in valves, and replace the air bleed O-rings if necessary.

Factors That Can Affect Your Pool Filter PSI

Several factors that can impact the pressure level of your pool filter include;

1. The Size of Your Pool: The bigger the pool, the larger the filtration system required, and vice versa.

2. The Temperature: Higher temperatures increase water loss, thereby causing the pressure in the pool filter to drop.

3. The Amount of Swimmers: More swimmers lead to more debris and contaminants in the water, which can cause the pressure in the filter to rise.

Conclusion

Your pool filter should run at a PSI within the recommended range to ensure that the system operates efficiently. If your filter pressure is consistently out of the recommended range, this could indicate that there is a problem that needs to be addressed, such as a clogged filter, leakage or air bubbles. By following the steps above, you can determine the optimal PSI level for your pool filter and take any necessary corrective measures to maintain it. Remember, the cleaner your pool water, the safer it is to swim in, so always manage your pool filter properly.

After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
11. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump . Switch on the electric heater if any .
----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
Poolking’s sand filter warranty is 3 years for fiberglass filter,2 years for plastic filter.During the warranty period,if the filters parts have any damage,we can judge the factors according to the photos or videos, then we can offer free parts to replace. If the filters are damaged badly,we will provide a new one.
The pumps and lights are 1 year warranty, the method is same as filters.
a. Power failure or motor protection tripped
b. Pump doesn't vent
c. Pump doesn't fill the water
d. Suction line/hose leaking
e. Transparent cover not properly installed - check filter basket - even bolts
f . Inlet suction process is too large g.) Total resistance loss exceeds the allowable range of the pump - recalculate the required pressure
h. Mechanical shaft seal leakage
