What is the Backwash in Pool Filter For?

If you own a swimming pool, you’re probably familiar with the backwash feature of your pool filter. But do you know what it’s for, and how to use it effectively? In this article, we’ll explore the backwash feature in pool filters and explain everything you need to know.

Understanding Pool Filters

First, it’s important to understand how pool filters work. A pool filter is designed to remove impurities and debris from the water in your pool. It works by pumping the water through a series of porous surfaces, such as sand or diatomaceous earth, which trap the impurities and allow the clean water to pass through.

Over time, these impurities build up and start to clog the filter. This is where the backwash feature comes in.

What is Backwashing?

Backwashing is the process of cleaning out a pool filter by reversing the flow of water through it. Rather than pushing water through the filter and into the pool, backwashing serves to circulate water in the opposite direction. This dislodges and flushes out the trapped impurities, preparing the filter to once again remove particles from the pool's water.

When Should You Backwash Your Pool Filter?

Backwashing too often can actually damage your pool filter, so it’s important to understand when and how often you should be backwashing your filter. Here are a few factors to consider:

- Pool usage: If your pool is being used frequently, you’ll likely need to backwash more frequently as well. This is because increased pool usage means more debris and particles that need to be filtered out.

- Filter type: The type of filter you have will also affect how frequently you need to backwash. For example, cartridge filters need to be cleaned less frequently than sand filters.

- Water pressure: As the pressure gauge on your filter rises, it’s an indication that the filter is getting clogged and needs to be backwashed soon.

A general rule of thumb is to backwash your pool filter when the pressure gauge reaches 10 pounds above its clean reading. You may need to adjust this based on the specific factors corresponding to your pool usage.

How to Backwash Your Pool Filter

Now that you understand why and when to backwash your pool filter, let’s discuss how to do it effectively. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Turn off your filter system and any automatic cleaning features.

Step 2: Locate the backwash valve on your pool filter. It may be labelled or coloured differently depending on the type of filter you have.

Step 3: Attach a backwash hose to the valve and run the other end to a safe drainage area away from your pool. This will prevent any debris from returning to your pool.

Step 4: Turn your filter system back on and set the valve to backwash mode.

Step 5: Allow the system to run for 2-3 minutes or until the water in the backwash hose runs clear. This indicates that the impurities have been flushed out of the filter.

Step 6: Turn off the filter system, set the valve back to normal mode, and rinse the filter for 30 seconds in recirculation mode to ensure any remaining debris has been flushed out.

Conclusion

By understanding the backwash feature in pool filters, you can keep your pool sparkling clean and avoid any damage to your filter system. With the right approach and knowledge, backwashing can be a breeze.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
