What is Backwashing Pool Filter

If you own a swimming pool or spa, you know how important it is to keep your pool water clean. A regular maintenance schedule of cleaning and sanitation should be part of your routine. Filtration is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your pool remains clean and safe for swimmers. If you own a pool or spa, it's essential to know about backwashing. In this article, we will answer the question What is Backwashing Pool Filter and explain why you should be backwashing your pool regularly.

Understanding Pool Filtration

Before we dive into backwashing, let's first discuss what pool filtration does. Pool filtration removes debris and small particles from your pool water, making sure that it remains clean and safe for swimming. Filtration also helps in balancing the water chemistry and reduces the amount of chlorine or other chemicals required to maintain the pool.

There are three main types of pool filters - sand, cartridge, and Diatomaceous Earth (DE). No matter which type you are using, they all have one job - to keep debris and contaminants out of your pool. A pool filter is essential in maintaining the proper chemical balance of your pool, so it's essential that you understand how it works.

What is Backwashing?

Think of backwashing as "cleaning the filter." Over time, the filter will start to get clogged with debris and small particles. When the filter is no longer working correctly, it's time to backwash. Backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water through the filter, which dislodges dirt, debris, or other contaminants that have clogged the filter.

When to Backwash

It's essential to know when to backwash, as overdoing it can cause premature wear and tear on your filter, requiring replacement sooner than necessary. The ideal time to backwash is when the pressure gauge on the filter shows an increase in pressure of about ten pounds above the normal operating pressure of the filter. For example, if the normal operating pressure is 20 psi, then when the pressure gauge reads 30 psi or higher, it's time to backwash.

How to Backwash a Pool Filter

Backwashing is a straightforward process that most pool owners can handle. While the process can vary slightly depending on your filter type, the basics are the same. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump

Step 2: Turn the multiport valve to the backwash position

Step 3: Turn on the pump and run it until the water in the sight glass runs clear.

Step 4: Turn off the pump and the multiport valve and reset the valve to the normal filter position.

Step 5: Turn on the pump again and check the pressure gauge. It should have gone back to the normal range.

Backwashing is a simple, yet essential maintenance task for all pool owners. Making sure that your filter is servicing properly will ensure that your pool remains safe and enjoyable to use. Now that you know the answer to the question What is Backwashing Pool Filter, be sure to add it to your pool maintenance routine.
