what causes pool filter to lose pressure

Author: PoolKing - Pool Sand Filter Manufacturers

As a pool owner, maintaining clean and clear water is vital. Your pool filter plays a significant role in keeping the pool water free from contaminants, debris, and other unwanted particles. But what happens when your pool filter begins to lose pressure? Do you know the potential causes and how to fix it? In this article, we'll explore what causes pool filters to lose pressure and how to troubleshoot the issue.

What is the Pool Filter System and How Does it Work?

The pool filter is a vital component of a healthy swimming pool. The main function of the pool filter is to remove impurities, dirt, and debris from the water to keep it sparkling clean. Most standard pool filter systems are made up of three main parts: the pump, the filter, and the plumbing system that connects them.

When you turn on your pool pump, the water gets sucked into the pump, which sends it through the filter. The filter traps dirt and debris, while the clean water goes back into the pool. The pressure gauge on the filter is an essential tool to measure the pressure in the system. However, when the filter starts to lose pressure, it can negatively affect the entire pool system.

Sub Heading 1: Dirty Filtration System

A dirty filter is one of the primary causes of pressure loss in pool filters. Over time, debris, leaves, and other contaminants get trapped in the filter, causing it to reduce the free flow of water. Clogged filters restrict water flow and cause the filter system to work harder to push water through, leading to low pressure. To prevent this issue, you should clean the filter regularly, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Sub Heading 2: Inadequate Filter Sizing

Another reason why a pool filter might lose pressure is that the filter is too small for the pool size. If the pool filter is undersized, it means that it cannot keep up with the demand of the pool water, and the water pressure drops. You should ensure that your pool filter is adequately sized for the size of your pool.

Sub Heading 3: Broken O-Rings

An O-Ring is a critical part of the filter housing, which keeps a seal between the filter tank and the filter head. O-Rings can become old, worn, or damaged, which can lead to a loss of pressure within the pool filtration system. A broken or worn-out O-Ring in the filter housing results in air leaks that reduce the system's pressure.

Sub Heading 4: Low Water Levels

The water level in the pool is an essential factor that affects the filter's operation. If the water level is low, the pool pump could run dry, leading to low pressure in the pool filter. Always ensure that the pool water level is at the correct level; it should be about halfway up on the pool skimmer's opening.

Sub Heading 5: Mechanical Issues

Sometimes a mechanical issue could be the cause of low pressure in the pool filter. Issues that could cause such problems include a malfunctioning pool pump, an issue in the electrical system or the plumbing system. Mechanical issues may also arise when incorrect chemicals are added to the pool, causing damage to the pump or filter's mechanical components.

In summary, there are several causes of a pool filter losing pressure, as we have seen. Some causes can be addressed quickly by the pool owner, while others need the attention of a professional. A well-maintained pool filter will run efficiently and keep pool water free from impurities, making it safe for swimmers. Always keep track of your filter pressure, and when you notice a sudden drop, investigate the issue as soon as possible.
