what causes a pool filter to lose pressure

Author: PoolKing - Pool Sand Filter Manufacturers

If you own a swimming pool or are planning to purchase one, you need to know that a pool filter is an essential component that keeps the pool clean and sanitized. However, over time, your pool filter may start to lose pressure, and you may not know why. This article aims to shed light on what causes a pool filter to lose pressure and how it can affect your pool's health.

Understanding Pool Pressure

Before delving into what causes pool filters to lose pressure, you need to understand what pool pressure is. Whenever you run your pool filter, it creates pressure as it pumps water through the pool's circulation system. The pressure indicator on your filter lets you know how well the filter is performing. In the case of a pressure drop, your pool filter may not be functioning correctly, leading to dirty water and bacteria and algae growth.

Five Reasons Why Your Pool Filter Is Losing Pressure

1. Clogged Pool Filter

One of the most common reasons for losing pressure in your pool filter is a clogged filter. The pool filter is meant to filter out dirt, leaves, and other debris that may find their way into the pool, and over time, these contaminants accumulate and clog the filter. When this happens, water pressure in the pool filter drops, making it less effective in cleaning the pool water. A simple solution to this problem is to clean the filter regularly, and if that does not work, you may have to replace the filter cartridge.

2. Worn Out Seals

The seals in your pool filter are critical to maintaining pressure in the filter system. When these seals wear out, they may not be able to maintain enough pressure in your pool filter, leading to a pressure drop. In some cases, worn-out seals can let air into the filter system, reducing the pressure even further. Replacement of worn-out seals is the best course of action to restore pressure in the pool filter.

3. Too Much Air In The System

If there is too much air in your pool's circulation system, it can cause low pressure in your pool filter. This problem can occur when the water level in your pool is too low, and the skimmer sucks in air. Additionally, a blockage or leak in the return line can also allow air into the system. If this happens, try to locate the source of the air and remove it to restore your pool filter's pressure.

4. Leaking Pump Basket

The pump basket is another essential component of your pool filter that can cause low pressure when it is leaking. The pump basket is responsible for removing larger debris before it enters the pool filter system. If there is a crack or hole in the basket, it can allow debris to recirculate back into the pool, resulting in a clogged filter and low pressure. A simple solution to this problem is to replace the pump basket.

5. Suction-Side Leak

When there is a suction-side leak in the pool's circulation system, it can cause air to enter the inlet system, leading to a pressure drop in the filter. To diagnose this problem, check your pool's water level, and if you find that it’s lower than it should be, that could indicate a suction-side leak. Another method is to turn off the pump and check the plumbing connections for any damage, cracks or leaks. If you find any, replace or repair the faulty parts.

Conclusion

A pool filter is a crucial component of your swimming pool that keeps it clean and sanitized. When it starts to lose pressure, it can quickly become ineffective and result in dirty, unsanitary pool water. By understanding the five common reasons why your pool filter is losing pressure, you now know what to do to restore it to its former glory. It is recommended that you perform regular maintenance on your pool filter and other components to prevent problems in the future. With proper maintenance, your pool filter will maintain optimum pressure and keep your pool sparkling clean for years to come.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
