The Different Types of Pool Filters
Before we dive into how to clean pool filters, let’s discuss the different types of pool filters. There are three main types of pool filters: cartridge filters, sand filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Each type performs the same function of removing debris from the pool, but they do so in slightly different ways.
Cartridge filters: Cartridge filters are made of pleated polyester material that provides an excellent surface area for trapping dirt and debris. They require less maintenance than sand or DE filters and are easy to clean.
Sand filters: Sand filters use a bed of silica sand to trap debris. As the water passes through the sand, small particles are filtered out. Sand filters need to be backwashed periodically to remove the trapped debris.
DE filters: DE filters use a fine powder made from crushed seashells or diatoms. DE powder is added to a filter tank where it coats a grid of fabric-covered frames. As the water passes through the grid, fine particles are trapped by the DE powder.
Cleaning a Cartridge Filter
Cleaning a cartridge filter is relatively straightforward but should be done periodically to maintain optimal filtration levels. Here are some steps to clean a cartridge filter:
1. Turn off the pump and relieve the pressure in the filter tank.
2. Remove the filter cartridge from the tank.
3. Rinse the cartridge with a hose to remove any loose debris.
4. Soak the cartridge in a solution of water and filter cleaner for several hours.
5. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a hose, making sure all the cleaner is removed.
6. Reinstall the filter cartridge in the tank and turn the pump back on.
Cleaning a Sand Filter
Sand filters require regular backwashing to remove trapped debris from the sand bed. Here are the steps to clean a sand filter:
1. Turn off the pump and move the multiport valve to the “backwash” position.
2. Turn the pump back on and let it run for several minutes until the water coming out of the backwash hose runs clear.
3. Turn off the pump and move the multiport valve to the “rinse” position.
4. Turn the pump back on and let it run for several minutes to remove any remaining debris.
5. Turn off the pump and return the multiport valve to the “filter” position.
6. Turn the pump back on.
Cleaning a DE Filter
Cleaning a DE filter is more involved than cleaning a cartridge or sand filter. Follow these steps to clean a DE filter:
1. Turn off the pump and relieve the pressure in the filter tank.
2. Remove the drain plug and allow the water to drain from the filter tank.
3. Remove the filter grid assembly from the filter tank.
4. Rinse each grid element with a hose to remove any loose debris.
5. Soak the grid assembly in a solution of water and filter cleaner for several hours.
6. Rinse each grid element thoroughly with a hose, making sure all the cleaner is removed.
7. Reassemble the filter grid assembly and return it to the filter tank.
8. Add fresh DE powder to the filter tank.
9. Turn on the pump and let it run until the filter reaches the proper pressure.
Tips for Maintaining a Clean Filter
- Check the pressure gauge on your filter regularly. A dirty filter will cause the pressure to rise.
- Backwash or clean your filter as needed.
- Use only recommended filter cleaners and follow the instructions carefully.
- If you are experiencing issues with your filter, seek advice from a professional pool service technician.
In summary, maintaining a clean pool filter is essential for keeping your pool water clear, healthy, and free of debris. Follow these tips for cleaning your pool filter to ensure optimal filtration levels and a well-maintained pool.
