Development and industry application of ultraviolet sterilizer

2023/03/21

Ultraviolet sterilizer technology is a physical disinfection method from the principle of action, no secondary pollution, safe and simple operation and maintenance. Short disinfection time without contact pool, small footprint, simple structure, fast equipment installation, the most broad-spectrum of microorganisms among various disinfection methods, and the disinfection effect is not affected by the pH value and temperature of the water. Ultraviolet sterilizers are being used more and more by virtue of their unique advantages.

With the rapid urbanization and the construction of a large number of urban domestic sewage plants, a large amount of sewage is discharged into natural water bodies after chlorine disinfection and used as drinking water sources, resulting in serious chlorine pollution of the downstream water bodies of sewage plants. Chlorination is the most common method used in urban water treatment and disinfection. However, with the large-scale use of chlorine disinfection, people's awareness and understanding of this method is also deepening, and more and more attention is paid to the problems arising from its use. This is mainly because residual chlorine is harmful to fish in the receiving water, and three by-products will be produced during the treatment process.

Among the more than 500 known disinfection by-products of chlorine disinfection, only a small number have been studied and confirmed to have an impact on human health, and there are still more than 500 disinfection by-products to be identified, and what is more worrying is the use of There is a lack of risk analysis and management plans for these by-products. It is precisely because of concerns about these problems that countries and regions around the world have formulated various laws and regulations to limit or control the use of chlorine disinfection. 1. The harm of chlorine disinfection Chlorine disinfection is very harmful to the human body, mainly in the following aspects: (1) Residual chlorine: In order to maintain the sterilization effect of the sewage plant, residual chlorine should be kept in the discharge water, and the residual chlorine should be discharged into natural water bodies. It will kill microorganisms and algae in the water.

Destroy the lowest layer of the food chain at the bottom of the water, and the microorganisms and algae will die, so that the food for small fish, shrimp and other shellfish will be insufficient and the quantity will be reduced, which will affect the quantity and balance of other aquatic products. (2) Chlorine disinfection will also produce carcinogenic chlorine nitrogen compounds. In the process of killing microorganisms, chlorine will oxidize with organic matter in cancer-causing cells. The by-products include chlorine ammonia and chlorine-halogen compounds, among which THM is a carcinogen. THM accumulates in aquatic products and remains in the body after human consumption, causing cancer.

2. The development of ultraviolet sterilizer technology With the advancement of science and technology, ultraviolet sterilizer equipment is widely used by people, because ultraviolet sterilizers are not only convenient, cheap, pollution-free and have no residue, the only disadvantage is that in good weather conditions to obtain. Since the bactericidal effect of ultraviolet rays has reached a global consensus, the use of ultraviolet sterilizer equipment for sterilization has been popularized in various fields. (1) In 1878, scientists had discovered the bactericidal ability of ultraviolet rays, but there was no way to produce ultraviolet rays at that time, so this discovery could not be applied.

(2) In 1901, another scientist invented the mercury arc ultraviolet lamp. However, due to the limitations of filament materials, vacuum technology, and quartz purity at that time, the life of the mercury arc lamp was not long, and the efficiency of UV-C was also low. , but the invention of the mercury arc lamp opened the door for humans to use ultraviolet light to sterilize bacteria. (3) After the invention of the mercury lamp in the United States in 1940, it changed. The low-pressure mercury lamp is characterized by stable operation and high ultraviolet efficiency (30-40% of the energy is converted into sterilization power consumption), coupled with quartz purification and improved vacuum technology, the life of the low-pressure mercury ultraviolet lamp can be as long as 10,000 hours (the original intensity 80%).

The invention of the low-pressure mercury lamp has greatly developed the application of ultraviolet rays. The application of UV disinfection equipment in the United States was slightly slower than that in Europe, and this situation changed in the 1970s. (4) In 1982, Canada’s Trojan Technology Company developed the world’s first open channel UV disinfection system UV2000, and introduced the concept of a modular UV disinfection system, that is, the system can be composed of several independent UV lamp modules (See Figure 2) And the water flows by gravity, without the need for supporting equipment such as pumps, pipes, and valves.

System maintenance can be performed on a single module, and the UV lamp module can be easily taken out of the open channel for maintenance. The system does not need to be shut down during maintenance, so no backup equipment is required, which makes system maintenance simple and convenient, and greatly reduces the cost of ultraviolet sewage disinfection. At the same time, when the water treatment plant is expanding or transforming, it is only necessary to increase the number of UV lamp modules appropriately, without purchasing a complete system. At present, more than 3,000 urban water treatment plants around the world have installed and used ultraviolet sterilizer sewage disinfection systems. After more than 20 years of development in North America, it has become a mature, reliable and practical disinfection treatment technology.

In my country, the development and application of ultraviolet sterilizer technology is becoming more and more mature, and the number of users of ultraviolet sterilizers is also increasing. The above data fully demonstrate that ultraviolet sterilizers have great practicability and development prospects. Poolking is the best swimming pool equipment manufacturer and supplier in China.
