How to Use a Cartridge Pool Filter

Maintaining a clean and healthy swimming pool is a top priority for many pool owners. To achieve this, an efficient filtration system is essential. Cartridge pool filters are easy to use and maintain, which makes them a popular choice among pool owners. In this article, we will guide you through the process of using a cartridge pool filter to keep your pool sparkling clean.

Is a Cartridge Pool Filter Right for You?

Before discussing how to use a cartridge pool filter, it is important to know whether it is the right choice for your pool. Cartridge pool filters are suitable for smaller and medium-sized pools because they filter out finer particles and debris than sand filters. They are also easier to clean and maintain than DE (diatomaceous earth) filters. If you have a larger pool with a lot of debris or a commercial pool, a sand or DE filter may be more appropriate.

Installing a Cartridge Pool Filter

The first step in using a cartridge pool filter is to install it. Here's how:

1. Choose the Right Size: Determine the size of your pool and purchase a filter that is suitable. The filter should be able to handle the volume of water in your pool.

2. Turn off the Power: Before installing the filter, turn off the power to the pool pump.

3. Remove the Old Filter: If you are replacing an existing filter, remove it by unscrewing the clamps that hold it in place. If you are installing a new filter, skip this step.

4. Prepare the New Filter: Remove the filter from its packaging and remove any plastic wrap or foam inserts. Make sure the filter is clean and free from debris.

5. Install the New Filter: Position the filter in the pump basket and secure it with the clamps provided. Make sure the clamps are tight to avoid leaks.

6. Reconnect the Plumbing: Reconnect the plumbing to the filter and tighten the connections. Use Teflon tape to ensure that there are no leaks.

7. Turn on the Power: Turn the power back on to the pool pump and test the filter for leaks.

Using a Cartridge Pool Filter

Once your cartridge pool filter is installed, it's time to start using it. Here's how:

1. Prime the Pump: Prime the pump by filling the pump basket with water. This will help the pump to start and draw water through the filter.

2. Turn on the Pump: Turn on the pool pump and let it run for several hours. This will allow the filter to start working.

3. Monitor the Pressure: Check the pressure gauge on the filter periodically. If the pressure rises more than 10 psi above the normal operating pressure, it's time to clean the filter.

Cleaning a Cartridge Pool Filter

Cleaning a cartridge pool filter is essential to maintain its efficiency. Here's how to clean it:

1. Turn off the Power: Before cleaning the filter, turn off the power to the pool pump.

2. Remove the Filter: Release the clamps that hold the filter in place and remove it from the pump basket.

3. Rinse the Filter: Rinse the filter with a garden hose to remove debris and dirt.

4. Soak the Filter: Fill a large bucket with water and add a cartridge cleaner solution. Soak the filter in the solution for several hours to remove any remaining debris.

5. Rinse Again: Rinse the filter again with a hose to remove any remaining solution.

6. Reinstall the Filter: Reinstall the filter in the pump basket and secure it with the clamps.

7. Turn on the Power: Turn on the power to the pool pump and test the filter for leaks.

Conclusion

Using a cartridge pool filter is simple once you know how to do it. Remember to choose the right size filter for your pool, install it properly, and clean it regularly to maintain its efficiency. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a clean and healthy swimming pool all season long.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
