How to Replace Sand in Above Ground Pool Filter

Maintaining an above ground pool can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to dealing with a dirty pool filter. One of the most common issues with pool filters is sand buildup, which can cause the filter to lose its effectiveness. Replacing the sand in your above ground pool filter is a relatively simple process that can be done in a few hours. In this article, we will walk you through the steps on how to replace sand in above ground pool filter.

What is Pool Filter Sand?

Pool filter sand is a specially graded sand that is used to trap dirt and debris in your pool filter. It is available in different sizes, from fine sand to coarse sand, and its effectiveness depends on the size and texture of the sand. Pool filter sand is usually replaced every five to seven years, depending on the level of use and the quality of the sand.

Why Replace the Sand in Your Above Ground Pool Filter?

Over time, pool filter sand can become clogged with dirt and debris, reducing its effectiveness in filtering out impurities from the water. This can result in the water being cloudy, dirty, and even hazardous to swimmers. Replacing the sand in your above ground pool filter can improve the water quality, reduce the amount of chemicals needed, and extend the life of the filter.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Replace Sand in Above Ground Pool Filter

Now that you know why it's important to replace the sand in your above ground pool filter, let's get started on the steps to do it.

Materials and Tools Needed:

- Pool filter sand

- Screwdriver

- Shop vac or plastic cup

- Garden hose

- Duct tape

- Wrench or pliers

- Protective gloves and eyewear

Step 1: Turn off the Power and Disconnect the Filter

Before you begin the sand replacement process, make sure that the electrical power to the filter is turned off. Disconnect the pump and filter from the electrical source and remove any plugs or cords that are attached to the filter.

Step 2: Drain and Remove the Existing Sand

While wearing gloves and eye protection, use a screwdriver to remove the main drain plug at the bottom of the filter to release the water. Use a shop vac or plastic cup to remove any remaining water from the filter. If the sand is wet or caked, use a garden hose to wash the sand out of the filter.

Once all the water is drained, use a wrench or pliers to remove the upper assembly of the filter, including the multiport valve or top cap.

Step 3: Replace the Sand

Use a duct tape around the bottom of the pipe to prevent sand from clogging the laterals. Pour the new filter sand into the filter using a plastic cup or scoop, slowly filling the filter with the new sand. Make sure that the sand is spread evenly and fills the filter to the recommended level, based on the size of your filter and the type of sand used.

Step 4: Reassemble the Filter

Carefully reattach the multiport valve or top cap to the filter, making sure that it is aligned correctly and securely. Reattach any plugs or cords that were previously removed from the filter.

Step 5: Backwash and Rinse

Turn the pump back on and set the multiport valve to the backwash position. Allow the pump to run until the water in the sight glass is running clear.

Once the water is clear, turn off the pump and set the multiport valve to the rinse position. Let the pump run for a few minutes to flush out any remaining debris.

Step 6: Enjoy a Clean Pool

Congratulations, you have successfully replaced the sand in your above ground pool filter. Turn the pump back on and check the filter pressure and flow rate. Once the pool water is clear and free of debris, you can enjoy swimming in crystal clear water.

Conclusion:

Replacing the sand in your above ground pool filter can seem like a daunting task, but it is a simple one that can be done in just a few hours. By following these steps, you can improve the water quality, reduce the amount of chemicals needed, and extend the life of your pool filter. With a little effort, you can enjoy crystal clear water all summer long.
