How to Remove and Clean Pool Filter
If you own a pool, then cleaning and maintaining it is an essential task that you should never overlook. The cleanliness and hygiene of your pool water are crucial, and one of the key components of a clean pool is a well-maintained filter. The pool filter retains all the impurities and debris from the water making it essential to clean regularly. In this article, we will discuss how to remove and clean a pool filter.
What is a Pool Filter?
Before we delve into the process of removing and cleaning the filter, we will briefly discuss what a pool filter is. A pool filter is a device that removes debris and impurities from your pool water. It is an essential component that ensures your pool water is clean and crystal clear.
Types of Pool Filters
There are three types of pool filters; sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Each of these filters has its unique characteristics and cleaning procedures. Understanding the type of filter your pool has is essential in determining the cleaning procedure.
Removing the Filter
Before removing the filter, ensure that the pool pump is off to avoid any accidents. The process of removing the filter may vary depending on the type of filter your pool has.
Removing a Sand Filter
If your pool has a sand filter, you need to switch it off, and then turn the valve's handle to the backwash position. Then, remove the drain plug and the basket lid to relieve the pressure from the pipes. Once the pressure is relieved, you can remove the filter lid, slowly lift and pull out the sand filter from its platform.
Removing a Cartridge Filter
Turn off the pool pump and relieve the pressure from the pipes. Once the pressure is relieved, remove the retaining ring on the filter housing, and loosen the clamp. You can then pull the filter housing cap off and remove the cartridge filter.
Removing a DE Filter
Switch off the pool pump and relieve the pressure from the pipes. Afterward, unscrew the air relief valve on the top of the filter and remove it. Turn the lock-ring counter-clockwise and carefully lift the lid to remove the filter.
Cleaning the Filter
After removing the filter, it is time to clean it. We will discuss the cleaning process for each type of filter.
Cleaning a Sand Filter
To clean a sand filter, you need to backwash it. Connect a backwash hose to the waste outlet, ensure that the pool pump is off, and turn the valve handle to the backwash position. Afterward, turn on the pump and let it run for about five to ten minutes or until the water being discharged is clear. Then, stop the pump, turn the valve handle to the rinse position, and run the pump again for about a minute. This process ensures that any dirt flushed out during the backwash is removed from the filter.
Cleaning a Cartridge Filter
To clean the cartridge filter, connect a garden hose to a spray nozzle, and spray the cartridges to remove any debris from the surface. Ensure to rotate the cartridge during the cleaning process to ensure that it is cleaned thoroughly. Afterward, soak the cartridge in filter cleaner overnight or as recommended by the manufacturer. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with a hose, and it's ready to install.
Cleaning a DE Filter
To clean a DE filter, remove the filter's top and grid assembly. Hose off the grids to remove any loose debris and coat them with diatomaceous earth filter powder. Then, reassemble the grid assembly and backwash for about two to three minutes until the waste water runs clear. After backwashing, add the calculated amount of DE filter powder to the skimmer, and the filter is ready for use.
Conclusion
Maintaining your pool filter is essential for ensuring your pool water is clean and clear. The cleaning process may seem daunting, but with these simple steps, you can easily remove and clean your pool filter with ease. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions when cleaning your filter for the best results.
