Author: PoolKing - Pool Sand Filter Manufacturers

Introduction

Keeping a swimming pool clean is an essential part of enjoying it. One of the necessary things a pool owner must do is to keep their pool filters free from algae, which can grow rapidly in warm weather. When the filter is clogged with algae, it won't function correctly, and the water will be cloudy, making it unappealing to swim in. So, if you're looking for ways to clean your pool filter, you're in the right place.

What is Algae?

Algae are aquatic plants that are commonly found in stagnant or still waters like ponds, lakes, and swimming pools. It is microscopic and appears green, yellow, or brown. When it grows on pool surfaces or filters, it can be unsightly, slippery, and unsafe.

Types of Algae

There are many types of algae that can grow in pools, and they come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some of the most common types are:

1. Green Algae: This is the most common type of algae found in pools. It makes the water look green and slimy.

2. Yellow Algae: Also known as mustard algae, it appears as yellow or greenish-brown spots on pool surfaces and is quite challenging to eradicate.

3. Black Algae: This type of algae is dense and black, and it is difficult to remove once it has taken hold.

4. Pink Algae: Pink algae isn't actually algae but a type of bacteria. It usually grows in areas with low circulation like corners, stairs, and other shaded spots.

Steps to Remove Algae from Pool Filters

Now that you know what algae is and the different types, it's time to get rid of it from your pool filters. Here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Turn Off the Pump

Before you start, turn off the pump and inspect the filter. You may need to remove the filter cartridge or backwash the sand or DE filter.

Step 2: Remove the Filter Element

Remove the filter element from the filter housing and inspect it for algae growth. If you see any, place it on a plastic sheet.

Step 3: Soak the Filter Element

In a large bucket or container, mix a solution of one part muriatic acid to ten parts water. Place the filter element in the solution and let it soak for about twenty minutes.

Step 4: Rinse the Filter Element

After soaking, rinse the filter element thoroughly with water to remove any remaining algae, debris, or acid residue.

Step 5: Replace the Filter Element

Once cleaned and rinsed, replace the filter element in the filter housing and turn the pump back on.

Prevention Tips

Preventing algae growth in your pool filter is the best way to avoid having to clean it frequently. Here are some tips to help prevent algae growth:

1. Regular Sanitization: Regularly sanitize your pool with chlorine or other sanitizers to eliminate algae.

2. Proper Circulation: Ensure proper water circulation and filtration by running the pump for eight to ten hours daily.

3. Regularly Check Water Chemistry: Regularly check the water chemistry and keep pH between 7.2-7.8 and alkalinity between 80-120 ppm.

4. Maintain Water Level: Maintain the proper water level and change the water once a year.

Conclusion

Algae can be a nuisance in swimming pools, especially when it grows in the pool filters. But with the steps outlined in this article, you can effectively remove algae from your pool filter and prevent its recurrence. Remember to regularly maintain your pool and take the necessary measures to prevent algae growth, and you'll have a crystal clear pool that's always ready to use.
