If you own a pool, you know that keeping it clean is crucial. One of the most important components of a clean pool is a properly functioning pool filter. Cleaning your pool filter is essential as it keeps your water clean and clear. Neglecting your pool filter can lead to cloudy or murky water and can even cause your filter to break down, leading to costly repairs. In this article, we will guide you on how to properly clean your pool filter.
Types of Pool Filters
Before we dive into the steps to clean a pool filter, it is important to understand the different types of pool filters available. There are three main types of pool filters: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Each type of filter has its own advantages and disadvantages.
1. Sand Filters
Most pool owners choose sand filters as they are affordable, easy to maintain, and efficient. Sand filters are capable of removing dirt and debris from your pool water. They work by pushing water through a bed of sand, which catches the contaminants before the clean water returns to the pool.
2. Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters are a low maintenance option. These filters have pleated cartridges that catch and filter out dirt and debris, providing a clean pool environment. Cartridge filters have a larger surface area than sand filters, allowing them to catch more dirt without frequent cleaning.
3. DE Filters
DE filters have a microporous powder called diatomaceous earth which coats the filter grids. When water passes through the grids, the DE powder traps dirt and debris. DE filters provide the most thorough cleaning of the three types of filters but require the most maintenance out of the three.
When Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?
It is important to recognize when your pool filter needs cleaning. Generally, you should clean your pool filter at least once a month during the swimming season. If you have heavy pool usage or your pool is exposed to a lot of dirt and debris, you may need to clean more frequently. Signs that indicate your pool filter needs cleaning include:
-The water becoming cloudy
-Reduced water flow
-Increased pressure on the pressure gauge
Steps to Clean Your Pool Filter
1. Turn off Your Pool Pump
Before cleaning the filter, turn off the pool pump to avoid damaging it.
2. Release Pressure
If you have a sand filter, switch the valve to the backwash position, then turn on the pump. This will release the pressure from the filter. If you have a cartridge filter, remove the cartridge and turn on the pump to release any remaining pressure.
3. Remove the Filter Element
If you have a sand filter, remove the filter's drain cap at the bottom of the filter to drain out any remaining sand. Then, remove the top of the filter tank and carefully lift out the sand-filled filter element. If you have a cartridge filter, remove the cartridge from the filter housing.
4. Wash the Filter Element
Rinse the sand filter element with a garden hose, spraying water from the bottom to the top. Rinse until the water that is coming out of the filter is clear. If you have a cartridge filter, soak the cartridge in a specially formulated cleaning solution before hosing it down.
5. Reinstall the Filter Element
After you have washed and cleaned the filter element, reinstall it back into the tank. Reinstall drain cap (for sand filter) and hand tighten. Replace the top of the filter tank and make sure it is snugly secured.
6. Turn on the Pump
After the filter is re-secured, turn on the pool pump and run it for at least 2 minutes before returning it to regular operation mode.
Conclusion
Cleaning your pool filter is crucial in maintaining a clean and healthy swimming pool. Follow the above steps to properly clean your pool filter, which will help maintain efficient filtration, reduce costly repairs, and ensure your pool water stays crystal clear all summer long.
