Making an Above Ground Pool Filter
When it comes to enjoying hot summer days, nothing beats a cool and refreshing dip in a swimming pool. However, for many homeowners, the cost of installing an in-ground pool is too expensive. The solution? An above ground pool! Not only are they cheaper, but they also require less maintenance. However, proper filtration is essential to keep your above ground pool clean and safe for swimming. So, if you're a DIY enthusiast looking for a new project, check out these steps on how to build your own above ground pool filter.
1. Gather Equipment
Before you start constructing your filter, here are the items you will need:
- A plastic container that can hold at least 5 gallons of water.
- A pool pump (one that can circulate at least 2,500 liters of water per hour).
- A PVC pipe (about 1 meter in length).
- PVC glue.
- Hose clamps.
- A pool filter cartridge.
- A drill.
- A marker or pen.
2. Choose the Location
Once you have all the necessary equipment, you need to decide where to put the filter. The best spot is near the pool and close to a power supply. Also, ensure that the ground is level and firm enough to hold the filter without tilting.
3. Make the Holes
Take the plastic container, turn it upside down, and mark the top with a marker. Draw a circle that is about two inches smaller than the circumference of your PVC pipe. Drill a hole in the center of the circle and cut out the circle using sharp scissors or a utility knife.
Next, drill two smaller holes about one inch apart from each other on the side of the container. These holes will be used to secure the hose clamps later.
4. Connect the Pump
Attach the pool pump to the PVC pipe using PVC glue. Ensure that the pump is centered on the pipe and leave enough space on one end to attach the hose clamp.
5. Attach the Hose Clamps
Attach the hose clamps on the PVC pipe, connecting the pump and the filter container. Tighten the clamp securely to prevent water leakage.
6. Fit the Filter Cartridge
Place the filter cartridge inside the plastic container. Ensure that it fits snuggly, leaving no gaps around the edges.
7. Connect the Pump to the Power Source and Pool
Connect the other end of the PVC pipe to the pool pump and then connect the pump to a power source. Once that is done, attach the pool skimmer to the inlet valve on the pool and then attach the pool return to the outlet valve on the pool. The flow of water should direct water into the pump, through the filter, and then back into the pool.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, building an above ground pool filter is not as complicated as it might seem. The process outlined above is relatively easy, and the best part is that it won't cost you a fortune. With a bit of patience, you can construct your own filter that will ensure your pool remains clean and safe to swim in all summer long. So, roll up your sleeves, get your equipment ready, and start building your filter today!
