how to know if my pool filter is working properly

Introducing a pool into your backyard can provide you with endless hours of fun and relaxation. Swimming pools can offer a great escape from the heat during the summer months, and they can be a refreshing option for those who love fitness and exercising. However, to enjoy all of these benefits, it's crucial to keep your pool clean, and this is where pool filters come in.

Pool filters work to keep the water in your pool clean by removing impurities such as debris, bacteria, and algae. A filter is an integral part of a pool system, and if it's not working correctly, it can cause a lot of problems, including cloudy water and unbalanced pH levels. In this article, we'll run you through how to know if your pool filter is working correctly.

1. Water Flow Rate

The first thing to note when checking if your filter is working properly is the water flow rate. The water flow rate should be strong enough so that it can clean the entire pool effectively. If the water flow rate is weak, it could be a sign that there's some blockage or clogging in the filter.

To check the water flow rate, check your owner's manual for your pool's GPM (gallons per minute) rating. Once you have this number, use a flow meter to determine if your pool's actual GPM is within this range. If it's too low, it's time to check the filter.

2. Filter Pressure

Another way to know if your pool filter is working is by checking the filter pressure. If your filter is clogged, it will increase the pressure in your pool, which can be harmful to the system. Therefore, you need to check the filter pressure regularly to ensure it's within the normal range.

The PSI (pounds per square inch) gauge on the pool filter can help you determine the filter pressure. If the pressure is higher than usual or fluctuating, it could mean the filter needs to be cleaned.

3. Water Clarity

The primary function of a pool filter is to remove impurities and keep the water clean. Therefore, it's essential to observe the water clarity to know if the filter is working effectively. During regular maintenance and cleaning, take some time to inspect the water for any signs of cloudiness or algae buildup.

If you notice that the water is cloudy or the pool walls and floor have a green or brown coating, it could be a sign that the filter is not working as it should. You'll need to clean and maintain the filter to get rid of the impurities in the water.

4. Filter Age

The lifespan of a pool filter varies depending on the type of filter and how often it's used. Most filters last anywhere between three to five years, but if you don't maintain them, the lifespan could be shorter. Therefore, it's essential to check the age of your filter and replace it when necessary.

5. Scummy Film

If you notice an oily film on the water surface, it could be a sign of a dirty filter. This scummy film could be causing your pool to look less inviting and cause an unpleasant odor.

The scum layer is a small sign, but it can have a large impact on your pool. The good news is that it can be easily remedied by cleaning and maintaining the filter.

Conclusion

Maintaining and checking your pool filter regularly is essential to keep your pool clean and healthy. It's an easy way to ensure proper water filtration and avoid issues such as cloudy water or bacterial growth. By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure that your pool filter is working correctly, keeping your pool water clean and ready to dive into all summer long.
