How to Hook Up a Sand Pool Filter
If you're looking for an effective way to keep your pool water clean and pristine, a sand pool filter can be the way to go. Designed to trap particles and debris in the sand, these filters are durable, long-lasting and easy to install. However, hooking up a sand pool filter for the first time can feel overwhelming. In this guide, we’ll teach you how to hook up a sand pool filter step-by-step, so you can get back to enjoying your pool.
Choosing the Right Sand Pool Filter
The first step in hooking up a sand pool filter is to choose the right one. Make sure to choose a filter that is correctly sized for your pool and meets your specific needs. A high-quality filter should be able to handle at least the entire volume of your pool in eight hours, although a lower volume may be acceptable based on your particular circumstances.
Make sure to also consider the size of the filter tank, as you don’t want to have to replace the sand too often. A larger tank will be able to hold more sand, which can help save you money in the long run. Finally, consider whether you want a top-mounted or side-mounted valve. Top-mounted valves are generally easier to access and service, while side-mounted valves take up less space.
Preparing for Installation
Before installing your sand pool filter, it’s important to ensure that all necessary preparations have been made. First, make sure your pool’s plumbing is properly set up and in a location that is ideal for the filter’s location. You’ll also want to gather all necessary tools and equipment, including the sand itself. Depending on the size of your filter, you may need several hundred pounds of sand.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Turn off power to the pool pump
Before installing the sand pool filter, make sure your pool pump is turned off. This will allow you to work safely and avoid any accidents. If you’re unsure of how to turn off your pump, consult your owner’s manual or contact a pool professional.
Step 2: Drain water from the existing filter
Drain all water that remains in your existing pool filter to prepare for installation of the new sand pool filter. You can often use a drainage hose or a manual drain valve to do so. If possible, try to direct the water to a location where it won’t cause any damage.
Step 3: Inspect the filter
Before beginning the installation, inspect the sand pool filter for any visible signs of damage or defects. While rare, it’s essential to ensure that your filter is in good condition before proceeding.
Step 4: Remove old filter
Remove the old pool filter, including all the piping and connections that go with it.
Step 5: Mount the filter
Once the old filter has been removed, you can now mount the new sand pool filter in its place. Make sure to position the filter in a location where it is easily accessible and does not impede any other pool equipment.
Step 6: Connect the plumbing
With the filter in place, it's now time to connect the plumbing. Connect all necessary pipes, including the suction and return pipes, as well as any optional valves or adapters that may be required.
Step 7: Add the sand
Once the plumbing is connected, it's time to add the sand to the filter. Carefully pour the sand into the filter until it reaches the correct level. The sand should come with instructions on how to add it properly.
Step 8: Position the pressure gauge
Lastly, you want to position the pressure gauge on the filter. This will allow you to monitor and adjust your pool pressure as needed.
Experience the Benefits
With your sand pool filter properly hooked up, you can now experience the many benefits of clean, clear pool water. Not only will you save time and money on maintenance, but you'll also enjoy swimming in crystal-clear water that’s free of debris and contaminants.
