How to Get Sand Out of Your Pool Filter

Is your pool filter filled with sand? Don't worry, it's a common issue that many pool owners face. The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to get the sand out of your pool filter, and we'll cover them in this article. We'll also share tips for preventing sand from getting into your pool filter in the future.

1. Shut Off the Pump

Before you start working on your pool filter, you need to shut off the pump. This will prevent any water from flowing through the filter and help you avoid getting wet or injured during the cleaning process.

2. Release the Pressure

Next, you need to release the pressure from the pool filter. This is done by turning the air relief valve on the top of the filter counterclockwise. Some water will escape from the valve, but this is normal. Once the pressure is released, you can proceed with cleaning the filter.

3. Open the Filter

To access the sand in your pool filter, you'll need to open the filter cover. This is usually held in place by a clamp or screws. Check your owner's manual to see how to remove the cover, as it can vary by model.

4. Remove the Sand

With the filter open, you can now remove the sand. You can do this by scooping it out with a small plastic container or using a shop vacuum. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection during this step, as the sand can be abrasive.

5. Clean the Filter

Once the sand is removed, you need to clean the filter. Use a hose to spray any remaining sand particles off the filter elements. You may also want to use a filter cleaner to get rid of any algae or other organic matter that may have accumulated.

Preventing Sand from Getting Into Your Pool Filter

Now that you've cleaned your pool filter, you don't want to have to do it again anytime soon. To prevent sand from getting into your pool filter in the future, follow these tips:

1. Never vacuum your pool on "waste" mode.

When you vacuum your pool, make sure the valve is set to “filter,” not “backwash” or “waste.” If you vacuum in "waste" mode, you'll bypass your filter and send all the dirt and debris straight to your waste system, which will likely contain sand.

2. Use a leaf net.

A leaf net is a good investment if you live in an area where sand is prevalent. This will catch any debris before it gets into your pool and your filter system.

3. Check your pool pump strainer basket regularly.

Make sure your pool pump strainer basket is clean and clear of debris. Take a look at it at least once a week to make sure nothing is obstructing it.

4. Keep an eye on your skimmer basket.

Your skimmer basket is another important component of your pool's circulation system. Make sure it's clean and free of debris, too.

5. Replace your sand.

If your sand is more than 5 years old, it's likely time to replace it. This is because sand breaks down over time and becomes less effective at filtering your pool water. Replacing your sand every five years or so will help keep your pool water clear and clean.

Conclusion

Getting sand out of your pool filter can be a hassle, but it's a necessary task to keep your pool running properly. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily remove sand from your filter and get back to enjoying your pool. And by taking steps to prevent sand from getting into your filter in the future, you'll be able to minimize the chances of having to do this task again.
