Pool Filter Leaks: Causes and How to Fix Them

Your pool’s filter is the heart of the circulation system that keeps your pool crystal clear and safe for swimming. Over time, however, it may develop leaks that compromise its effectiveness and even damage your pool equipment. This article will help you understand the causes of pool filter leaks and how to fix them.

What Causes Pool Filter Leaks?

A pool filter may develop leaks for various reasons, including:

1. Poor Maintenance: Neglecting regular maintenance of your pool filter can cause it to deteriorate and develop leaks. Accumulated debris, chemicals, and mineral deposits can corrode the filter tank and its various components, causing cracks, holes or weakened seals.

2. Wear and Tear: Filters that have been in use for many years may eventually wear out due to natural wear and tear. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, high pressure, and contaminants in the water can contribute to the aging process.

3. Improper Installation: An incorrectly installed pool filter can also lead to leaks. This can be due to incorrect sizing, mismatched components, or faulty assembly.

4. Physical Damage: The filter tank can also be damaged by physical impact, such as from a falling tree limb, a lawn mower, or other heavy objects.

5. High Water Pressure: Excessive water pressure can result in stress to the filter tank, causing cracks in the plastic material.

How to Diagnose Pool Filter Leaks?

Before you can start fixing a pool filter leak, you need to determine the source of the leak. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Turn off the pool pump and power supply to the filter system.

2. Use a garden hose to fill the pool water level just below the skimmer.

3. Wait for the water level to stabilize and mark the level on the skimmer.

4. Turn on the pump and watch the filter system carefully for any signs of leaks.

5. Observe any water drips, wetness, or visual damage in the filter and its components.

6. Use a garden hose to wet any areas you suspect to be leaking to confirm the location.

7. Turn off the pump and continue diagnosing the leak point.

How to Fix Pool Filter Leaks?

Once you have identified the leak point, you can now proceed to fix the problem. Here are some methods to fix pool filter leaks depending on the type of leak:

1. Tank Leaks: If you have a leaking tank, you may need to replace it. First, drain the pool water below the filter level and disconnect the filter from the plumbing. Next, remove and discard the old tank, and install a new one by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Finally, re-plumb the filter, fill the water level and test it for leaks.

2. O-Ring and Gasket Leaks: If the leaks are due to worn or damaged O-rings or gaskets, you need to replace them. First, turn off the pump and relieve the pressure in the system. Next, remove the lid or the union nuts and the gasket from the filter. Take the worn part to a pool supply store and get a replacement. Then, put the new O-ring or gasket and lubricate them with Teflon or silicone.

3. Valve Leaks: If the filter leaks come from the valve, you may need to replace the diverter handle, diverter gasket, or the whole valve assembly. First, cut off the power, shut off the valve, and relieve the pressure in the system. Next, remove the tank top and then the valve. Replace the faulty part with a new one, then put everything back together.

4. Cracks or Holes: For small cracks or holes, you can use a vinyl patch kit to cover them. First, shut off the pump, drain the tank, and clean the area around the leak. Cut a vinyl patch slightly larger than the crack and apply a vinyl adhesive to the area. Press the patch firmly on the area, and let it dry. Refill the tank and wait for a day before testing for leaks. For larger damages, replacement may be necessary.

5. Professional Repair: If the filter damage is beyond your skill level, you may need to hire a professional repair technician. They can diagnose and repair the leak with advanced tools and techniques.

Conclusion

Pooling filter leaks can be a frustrating problem for any pool owner. However, by following the simple steps outlined in this article, you can diagnose and fix minor leaks in your pool filter. Remember to practice regular maintenance of your pool filter to avoid costly repairs and replacements.
