Swimming pools are amazing features to have in your home. They allow you to relax, cool off, and even exercise during the hot summer months. But like everything else, they have to be maintained. A vital component of pool maintenance is proper filtration. Sand filters are an efficient way of keeping your pool clean as they remove impurities through a layer of sand. But from time to time, these filters require cleaning to maintain their efficiency. This article will guide you on how to empty sand out of your pool filter.
What are Sand Filters and Why are They Important?
Sand filters are a type of pool filter that uses sand as the medium for filtering out impurities from the water. They have become popular alternatives to traditional cartridge filters and Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters because they are easy to operate, affordable, and require less maintenance.
The pool water is pumped into the sand filter, where the sand traps debris as it passes through it. Over time, the trapped debris accumulates in the filter bed, causing the filter to lose its efficiency. This is why it is essential to regularly clean the sand and the filter’s internal components.
To Empty Sand Out Of Pool Filter, Follow These Steps:
1. Turn Off The Pump
Before you begin the cleaning process, switch off the pool pump to avoid any accidents. You can do this by pressing the stop button on your pool pump or turning off the power supply to the machine.
2. Release the Pressure
Sand filters work under high pressure. Before disassembling the filter, it is crucial to release the pressure to avoid any hazardous situations. To do this, use the pressure gauge to confirm that the reading is at zero pounds per square inch (PSI). Then, locate the air release valve, open it, and let the air escape.
3. Position the Valve
Next, you need to position the filter valve to allow for the sand’s removal. There are several valves, including the push-pull valve, the multi-port valve, and the slide valve. However, the method for emptying sand out of your filter is dependent on your valve type.
If you have a push-pull valve, turn the handle in the "Backwash" direction until it stops. If you have a multi-port valve, move the handle to the "Rinse" position, then turn it to the "Backwash" position. Finally, if you have a slide valve, slide it to the "Backwash" position.
4. Remove the Sand
Once you have positioned the valve, remove the filter's top head to expose the sand bed. You may need a wrench or a screwdriver to unscrew the bolts or clamps, depending on your filter type.
Using a plastic scoop or small container, remove the sand from the filter's bed. Slowly lift out the sand, trying to leave as much of the water as possible. As you remove the sand, avoid tilting the filter to prevent water from getting into the system's internal components.
5. Clean the Components
While cleaning the sand out of the filter, check the internal components of the filter for any signs of wear and tear or damage. Clean the housing and inspect the laterals, which are the devices that allow water to pass through the sand without allowing sand to be carried back into the pool.
6. Add New Sand
After emptying out the sand, it is time to add new sand to the filter. Consult the manufacturer's instructions or a pool professional to determine the amount of sand required for your filter. Additionally, it would help if you used the recommended pool filter sand.
Finally, reassemble all the components and return the valve to its correct position. Turn on the pool pump and circulate the water for a few minutes before testing the water quality.
Overall, emptying sand out of your pool filter is a simple process that requires patience to avoid any damage to the filter's internal components. Cleaning your pool filter regularly is essential to maintain clean pool water, reduce energy consumption, and extend the life of the filter. Once you have followed these steps, your pool is sure to have crystal clear water. So, protect your investment and keep your pool clean today!
