How to Drain a Pool Filter Properly
If you own a pool, then you know how important it is to keep the water clean and clear. One way to maintain clean pool water is by regularly cleaning the pool filter. However, there comes a time when you need to drain the pool filter to get rid of the accumulated dirt and debris. In this article, we will take you through the steps for how to drain a pool filter effectively.
Understanding your Pool Filter
Before embarking on the process of draining your pool filter, it is important to understand the type of filter you have, as this will determine how you need to go about draining it. There are three main types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters.
Sand Filters
These filters are the most common types of pool filters, and they use sand as the filtration medium. Sand filters operate by circulating pool water through the sand bed, which traps dirt and debris. When the filter becomes too dirty or clogged, it is time to backwash the sand filter.
Cartridge Filters
These filters are made of polyester or paper material and trap debris as the water passes through the filters. Over time, the filter will become clogged and require cleaning. This is when you'll need to drain the pool filter.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters
DE filters are similar to sand filters, but they use finely ground diatomaceous earth, a fossilized material, as the filtration medium. Like sand filters, DE filters also involve a backwashing process, while the DE powder is replaced after a thorough cleaning.
Steps for Draining a Pool Filter
Step 1: Turn Off the Pool Pump
The pump needs to be turned off before any work is done on the filter, as disconnecting any parts while the pump is running can cause serious injury or damage.
Step 2: Release the Pressure
Relieve the pressure on the system to avoid any damage during the draining process. To do this, deactivate the filter valve by turning its handle to the backwash position.
Step 3: Locate the Drain Plug or Cock
The drain plug or cock will be fairly easy to locate, as it is usually situated at the bottom of the filter tank. It is important to have a container under the drain plug to catch the discharge water, debris, and dirt.
Step 4: Open the drain plug or Cock
Remove the drain plug or cock and release the water from the filter. The draining process may take a long time depending on the amount of water that needs draining.
Step 5: Clean the Filter
After the draining process is complete, you can continue to clean the filter using a suitable means, depending on the type of filter you have.
