How to Clean Underwater Pool Lights

Swimming pool lights are a great addition to any pool, creating an amazing ambiance and allowing you to enjoy your pool day or night. However, just like anything else, pool lights require maintenance and cleaning to keep them functioning properly. Over time, pool lights become dirty, and this can affect their performance. In this article, we will explore how to clean underwater pool lights and the different methods you can use to get rid of dirt, grime, and algae buildup.

Why Clean Underwater Pool Lights?

Before we dive into how to clean underwater pool lights, let's understand why cleaning them is important. Pool lights can accumulate dirt, debris, and algae buildup that can reduce their performance and even damage them over time. If you don't clean your lights regularly, they may become dull, and their brightness may diminish, affecting the overall pool's appearance. In addition, dirty pool lights can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can be harmful to your health.

Types of Pool Lights

Before you start cleaning your underwater pool lights, you should understand the different types of pool lights available. There are two types of pool lights, LED pool lights and halogen pool lights. LED pool lights are energy-efficient, last longer, and produce brighter lights than halogen pool lights. They are also easier to install, and the bulbs don't need to be replaced as frequently as halogen bulbs. Halogen pool lights, on the other hand, are less expensive, but they consume more energy, and their bulbs need to be replaced more often than LED pool lights.

Tools You Will Need to Clean Your Underwater Pool Lights

To clean your underwater pool lights, you will need a few tools, and these include:

- A pool brush

- A soft bristle brush

- A pool skimmer net

- A hose

- A pool sock

- A bucket

Method 1: Cleaning Pool Lights with a Skimmer Net

The easiest way to clean your pool lights is by using a skimmer net. Simply remove the skimmer basket from your pool pump and attach the skimmer net to the end of your pole. Use the net to skim any debris or leaves that have accumulated on or around the pool light.

Method 2: Cleaning Pool Lights with a Pool Brush

If your pool lights have a lot of dirt or algae buildup, using a pool brush is an effective way to clean them. Start by turning off the power to the pool lights, and then use a pool brush to scrub the dirt and algae off the lights. Rinse the lights with a hose to remove any remaining dirt, and then repeat the process until the lights are clean.

Method 3: Cleaning Pool Lights with a Pool Sock

A pool sock is a great way to clean your pool lights without having to scrub them manually. First, turn off the power to the pool lights and then fill the pool sock with a cleaning agent, such as vinegar or CLR. Place the pool sock over the pool light, making sure it covers it completely. Leave the pool sock on the pool light for about an hour to allow the cleaning agent to dissolve any dirt or algae buildup. After the hour is up, remove the pool sock and rinse the pool lights with a hose.

Method 4: Cleaning Pool Lights with a Soft Bristle Brush

For stubborn stains or dirt buildup, you can use a soft bristle brush to clean your pool lights. Start by turning off the power to the pool lights, and then carefully brush the dirt or stains off the lights. Rinse the lights with a hose to remove any remaining dirt or cleaning agent.

Method 5: Cleaning Pool Lights with Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural cleaning agent that can help get rid of dirt, grime, and algae buildup on your pool lights. Simply mix baking soda with water to create a paste, and then apply the paste to the pool lights. Leave the paste on for about 30 minutes to allow it to work on the dirt and stains. After 30 minutes, remove the paste with a soft bristle brush, and then rinse the pool lights with a hose.

Conclusion

In conclusion, cleaning your underwater pool lights is an easy and effective way to keep them functioning properly and improve the overall look of your pool. Regular cleaning will ensure your pool lights last longer and maintain their brightness. By using the different cleaning methods highlighted in this article, you can effectively remove dirt, grime, and algae buildup from your pool lights and enjoy a clean and bright swimming pool.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
