A swimming pool is one of the most enjoyable and relaxing spaces in your home, especially during hot summer months. However, maintaining it can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to cleaning the pool filter. A dirty filter can cause the pool water to become cloudy, murky, or even green.
The good news is that you can easily clean a Type A pool filter yourself, with the right tools, equipment, and technique. Here is how:
1. Shut off the pool pump
Before you start cleaning the pool filter, turn off the pump and the power supply to avoid accidents. Make sure that the pool water is below the skimmer level and the water pressure in the filter is low.
2. Dismantle the pool filter
Remove the lid or cover of the filter, carefully disconnect the pipes or hoses, and lift out the filter cartridge or grid. Take note of the parts you remove and their position, to make reassembly easier.
3. Rinse off the debris
Use a garden hose to rinse off any debris, dirt, or leaves that have accumulated on the filter cartridge or grid. Depending on the degree of dirt, you can use a gentle stream, a pressure washer, or a handheld brush.
4. Soak the filter
Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing one cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) or a pool filter cleaner in a gallon of warm water. Soak the filter cartridge or grid in the solution for about 30 minutes, to break down the dirt and grease.
5. Scrub the filter
Use a soft-bristled brush or a pool filter cleaning wand to scrub the filter cartridge or grid, focusing on the pleats, fins, or fingers. Be gentle but thorough, especially if the filter is delicate or brittle. Avoid using sharp objects, wire brushes, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the filter material.
6. Rinse and dry the filter
Once you have finished scrubbing the filter, rinse it off with clean water thoroughly. Make sure that there are no residual chemicals or particles left on the filter. Then, let the filter dry in a shaded, well-ventilated spot, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Do not put the filter in a dryer or store it when it is still wet, as this can cause mildew, odor, or deterioration.
7. Reassemble the pool filter
Once the filter is dry, reassemble it in the correct order, referring to the manual or the notes you took earlier. Check that all the connections are tight, and the filter is properly seated. Finally, turn on the pump and let it run for a few minutes to ensure that the filter is working correctly.
Conclusion:
Cleaning a Type A pool filter may seem daunting or time-consuming, but it is essential to keep the pool water clean, clear, and safe for swimming. By following these simple steps and using the right technique and equipment, you can clean the filter effectively and efficiently. Remember to check your filter regularly and clean it when it is dirty or clogged. Happy swimming!
