How to Clean Your Spa Pool Filter

Spa pools are a wonderful thing to have. But they require maintenance just like any other pool. One of the most important parts of that maintenance is keeping your filter clean. Clean filters help promote better water flow, which helps your pool and its equipment run more efficiently. In this article, we will take a look at how to clean a spa pool filter.

Understanding Your Spa Pool Filter

The first step to cleaning your spa pool filter is to understand what kind of filter you have. There are three main types of spa pool filters: cartridge, sand, and DE (diatomaceous earth). To determine which type of filter your spa pool has, you can examine the owner's manual or consult a professional. Understanding the type of filter you have will help you determine how often to clean it and how to clean it properly.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are the most common type of spa pool filter. They are made up of a paper-like material that traps dirt and debris as the water flows through them. The filter can be easily removed, cleaned, and replaced. Here are the steps for cleaning your cartridge filter:

1. Turn off the spa pool pump and disconnect the power.

2. Remove the cartridge filter from the filter housing.

3. Rinse the filter with a hose to remove any loose debris.

4. Use a filter cleaner to remove any built-up dirt and oils. Follow the instructions on the cleaner.

5. Rinse the filter again to remove any remaining debris.

6. Replace the filter back into the housing and turn the pump back on.

Sand Filters

Sand filters are less common than cartridge filters, but they are still used in some spa pools. As water flows through a sand filter, the sand traps dirt and debris. Unlike cartridge filters, sand filters require backwashing to remove the dirt and debris. Here are the steps for cleaning your sand filter:

1. Turn off the spa pool pump and disconnect the power.

2. Turn the multiport valve to the backwash position.

3. Turn the pump back on and let it run for 2-3 minutes or until the water coming out of the waste pipe is clear.

4. Turn off the pump and turn the multiport valve to the rinse position.

5. Turn the pump back on and let it run for 1-2 minutes.

6. Turn off the pump and turn the multiport valve back to the filter position.

DE Filters

DE filters are the least common type of spa pool filter. They use a powder called diatomaceous earth to filter the water. Here are the steps for cleaning your DE filter:

1. Turn off the spa pool pump and disconnect the power.

2. Remove the DE filter from the filter housing.

3. Rinse the filter with a hose to remove any loose debris.

4. Backwash the filter by turning the multiport valve to the backwash position and turning the pump back on.

5. Turn off the pump and remove the drain plug to drain any remaining water from the filter.

6. Add DE powder to the filter through the skimmer. The amount of DE powder needed will depend on the size of your filter.

7. Replace the drain plug and turn the pump back on.

Maintenance Tips

Now that you know how to clean your spa pool filter, there are a few maintenance tips you should follow to keep your filter running smoothly:

1. Check your filter regularly to see if it needs cleaning. How often you need to clean your filter will depend on how often you use your spa pool and how dirty it gets.

2. Keep your water chemistry balanced. Balanced water will help prevent debris from settling in your filter.

3. Check the pump and skimmer baskets regularly to make sure they are not clogged with debris.

4. Replace your filter when it becomes worn or damaged.

5. Consult a professional if you are unsure about any part of the cleaning or maintenance process.

Conclusion

Cleaning your spa pool filter is an important part of maintaining your pool. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can keep your filter running smoothly and promote better water flow in your pool. Remember to check your filter regularly and seek professional help if needed. With proper maintenance, your spa pool filter can last for many years to come.
