how to clean algae from pool filter

Author: PoolKing - Pool Sand Filter Manufacturers

Introduction:

Having a swimming pool in your backyard can be the perfect addition to your home during hot summer days to cool off and relax. However, that also means that you need to maintain your pool and keep it clean from debris and other pollutants. One of the most common problems that pool owners face is algae buildup on their pool filter.

Algae are microscopic plant-like organisms that can grow rapidly in warm, stagnant water. When left untreated, it can clog up your pool filter, reduce its efficiency, and even cause damage to your system. In this article, we will discuss how to clean algae from a pool filter effectively.

1. Identify the Type of Algae:

Before you can clean the algae from your pool filter, it is essential to identify the type of algae that is growing in your pool. There are three types of algae that commonly grow in swimming pools:

- Green Algae: This is the most common type of algae that turns your pool water into a murky green color.

- Yellow/Brown Algae: This type of algae appears as yellow or brown patches on the walls and floor of your pool.

- Black Algae: This is the most severe type of algae that appears as dark black spots on the walls and floor of your pool.

Identifying the type of algae is crucial because each type requires a different approach for cleaning.

2. Prepare Necessary Equipment:

Once you have identified the type of algae, the next step is to gather all the necessary equipment. You will need the following:

- Pool Brush

- Algae Scrubber

- Pool Skimmer

- Garden Hose

- Pool Shock

- Algaecide

Make sure that your equipment is clean before use, especially if you have used them before to remove algae. Contamination of equipment can lead to recontamination of your pool.

3. Brush Your Pool:

Using a pool brush, scrub the walls and the floor of your swimming pool thoroughly. This will loosen the algae and other debris, making it easier to clean. Make sure you brush areas where water flow is limited, such as the corners and steps.

4. Skim the Surface of Your Pool:

Use a pool skimmer to remove any remaining debris from the surface of your pool. This includes leaves, twigs, and other debris that may have fallen into your pool. These things can also contribute to the growth of algae in your pool.

5. Shock Your Pool:

After brushing and skimming, it is time to shock your pool. Pool shock is a form of chlorine that is used to kill bacteria and eradicate algae from your pool. Follow the instructions that come with your pool shock before applying it to your pool.

6. Apply Algaecide:

Once you have shocked your pool, apply algaecide to your pool. Algaecide will help to remove any remaining algae in your pool, preventing its growth in the future. Follow the instructions on the packaging for the best results.

7. Clean the Pool Filter:

After following steps 1-6, it is time to clean your pool filter. Turn off the pool pump and clean the filter basket. Once done, remove the filter and hose it down with a garden hose. Use an algae scrubber to remove any remaining debris or algae that is stuck to the filter.

Conclusion:

Keeping your pool clean is vital to maintaining its longevity and ensuring that it is healthy for your family to swim in. Algae buildup is one of the most common problems that pool owners face, but it is easy to clean if you follow the right steps. With the right equipment, chemicals, and proper maintenance, you can keep your pool algae-free all season long.

When use them together, silica sand should be placed on the bottom layer, and then activated carbon should be filled on the sand, but the cost of using two media is much higher.
