How to Clean a Clogged Pool Filter
If you have a pool, then you know that one of the biggest maintenance tasks is cleaning the pool filter. A clogged pool filter can lead to cloudy water, decreased water flow, and even damage to your pool equipment. However, regular cleaning of your pool filter can help prevent these issues and keep your pool water sparkling clean. In this article, we will guide you on how to clean your clogged pool filter effectively.
1. Identify the type of filter you have
Before you begin cleaning your clogged pool filter, it's important to know what type of filter you have. There are three types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Each type of filter requires a different cleaning method, so be sure to check your owner's manual or consult with a professional if you're not sure which type you have.
2. Turn off the pump
Before you start cleaning the filter, always turn off the pump to avoid any injuries. Keep in mind that the filter housing can be under significant pressure, and turning off the pump will help release some of that pressure.
3. Remove the filter
Once you’ve turned off the pump, remove the filter from the housing and take it out of the pool. If you have a sand filter, you will need to backwash it first. This process involves reversing the water flow through the filter, so the dirt and debris can be discharged from the filter.
4. Rinse off the filter
Next, rinse off the filter with a garden hose to remove any loose debris. This step is crucial in removing dirt, hair, and other debris that may be stuck on the filter screen. For cartridge filters, you can use a brush to scrub off any debris or dirt that may have stuck onto the filter.
5. Clean the filter
Once you’ve rinsed off the filter, it’s time to deep clean it to remove any stubborn dirt, bacteria, or algae that might be lurking deeper. With a sand filter, you need to change the sand in the filter at least once a season or more depending on how frequently the pool is used. The DE filter requires the DE powder to be replaced manually.
For cartridge filters, we recommend soaking them in a cleaning solution designed for pool filters. Follow the instructions for timing and vigorously clean it to help break up the debris and gunk stuck onto the filter. Rinse the filter again after soaking to clear any cleaning solution that may have remained on the cartridge.
6. Reassemble and replace the filter
Once you’ve cleaned your filter, you can reassemble it and put it back into the housing. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully, and ensure all seals and connections are tight, or it will cause leakages. Turn the pump and give the filter a test run to make sure it's working correctly.
Conclusion
Cleaning a clogged pool filter can seem like a daunting task, but with proper care and maintenance, it can be easy and efficient. Remember to inspect and clean your pool filter weekly, especially during heavy usage periods, and replace the filter every few years. Follow the necessary steps for your specific type of filter, and have a sparkling clean pool to enjoy throughout the swimming season.
