It is essential to keep your pool clean to ensure that it is safe to swim in. Regularly replacing the pool filter is one of the essential maintenance tasks that you must undertake. If you don't replace your pool filter, your pool may become cloudy, and the water may harbor contaminants that can pose a health risk to swimmers.
Changing the pool filter is relatively simple, but you need to follow the right steps to complete the task well. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to change the pool filter.
1. Understand Your Pool Filter
Before you begin, it is essential to understand the kind of pool filter you have. There are three types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filter. Each filter has its own unique properties which will determine how you replace it. Cartridge filters are the most common type and the easiest to replace.
2. Turn Off the Pool Equipment
Before proceeding, turn off the pool equipment. This is a safety precaution that will ensure that no water is running through the pump during the changing process. This step will prevent any accidents and make it easier to change the filter.
3. Remove the Old Pool Filter
After turning off the pool equipment, locate the old pool filter. If you have a cartridge filter, remove the cartridge element by unscrewing the top or bottom clamp. If you have a sand filter, unclamp or unscrew the closure ring and lift off the top. If you have a DE filter, remove the backwash hose and slowly unscrew the filter drain plug.
4. Clean the Filter Housing
After you remove the old filter cartridge, clean the filter housing by brushing off any debris or dirt. Also, make sure to clean the O-ring and lubricate it with silicone grease. This step is crucial because it ensures the O-ring seal is effective, providing optimal filtration.
5. Install the New Pool Filter
Insert the new filter cartridge in the housing and replace the top, ensuring the O-ring is in place. For sand and DE filters, refill the filter with the correct amount of sand or DE, place the top on the filter, and make sure it is appropriately secured.
6. Open the Air Release Valve
If you have a DE filter, open the air release valve, located at the top of the filter to release air. This step will ensure that the DE is distributed evenly in the filter.
7. Turn the Pool Equipment On
After replacing the new pool filter, turn the equipment back on to circulate water through the filter. Check that the filter is working correctly by opening the air release valve located near the pool pump. If the filter is not functioning properly, turn off the pool equipment and repeat the installation process.
In conclusion, it is essential to keep your pool filter clean to ensure that your pool is safe to swim in. Replacing the pool filter is an easy task when you follow the above steps. You must also pay attention to the type of filter you have as this will influence how you replace it. By changing your pool filter regularly, you will ensure your pool's longevity and safety for years to come.
