How to Change Sand on Pool Filter
If you have a swimming pool at home, it is essential to have a reliable pool filter system that keeps the water clean and free from debris. The pool filter uses sand to trap dirt and other contaminants in the water, preventing them from returning to the pool. Over time, the sand in the filter can become clogged or worn out, reducing its efficiency in keeping the water clean. In such cases, it becomes necessary to change the sand in the pool filter. Here is everything you need to know about how to change sand on a pool filter.
What You Need
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
- Plastic bags or tarp
- Sand filter cleaner
- Screwdriver
- Hose
- Filter sand
Step 1: Preparation
First, make sure that the pool pump is turned off and that you unplug it. Also, turn off the pool heater and any other equipment connected to the pool system. You can use plastic bags, a tarp, or any other means to cover the pool pump or motor to prevent any sand or debris from getting in.
Step 2: Drain or Dump Your Filter
Next, you will need to drain the water out of the filter tank. If you have a drain valve, turn it and let the water out. If you don’t have a drain valve, you’ll have to scoop out as much water as possible with a small container.
Step 3: Remove the Sand
To remove the sand, you need first to unscrew the top of the filter, then remove the sand from the tank (use a plastic scoop). It would be best if you then washed the inside of the filter with a garden hose to remove any remaining sand and debris.
Step 4: Clean the Filter Laterals
Using your garden hose, wash down the laterals to remove any debris or sand that has collected on them over time. If any of the laterals are broken, it’s important to replace them so that they function optimally.
Step 5: Add New Sand
Now that you’ve cleaned out the sand filter, you’re ready to refill it with new, clean sand. The new sand should be smooth and rounded, with a particle size of between 0.45mm and 0.55mm. You can find this sand at your local pool store.
Step 6: Reattach the Top of the Filter
Once you’ve added the new sand, you need to reattach the top of the filter. Make sure that the o-ring is seated correctly and that the clamp around the filter tank is secure. After that, turn on the pool pump and run it for several minutes to let the water circulate through the filter.
Step 7: Backwash Your Filter
After the water has circulated for about five minutes, it's time to backwash the filter. Make sure the pool pump is turned off and that the multiport valve handles are in the correct position. Then turn the pool pump on and let the water flush out the dirt and debris in the new sand.
Step 8: Return to Normal Operation
After backwashing, it’s time to return your pool to normal operation. You can now set the multiport valve to your desired function (filter, rinse or waste) and run your filter as you usually would. Check the pressure gauge on your system regularly to ensure that your filter is working as it should.
Conclusion
By following the steps above and carefully cleaning and replacing the sand in your pool filter, you can ensure that your pool will remain clean and enjoyable for all who use it. Remember to review your pool maintenance schedule regularly to ensure that you take good care of your swimming pool and that it remains in good condition over the years.
