How to Change Sand in Waterco Pool Filter

Having a swimming pool in your backyard is a luxury that everyone wishes for. A clean and well-maintained pool not only adds to the beauty of your home but also provides a refreshing escape from the scorching heat of summer. However, owning a pool also comes with certain responsibilities, one being the maintenance of the pool filter. A pool filter plays a crucial role in keeping the pool water clean and free of any impurities. In this article, we will guide you on how to change sand in your Waterco pool filter.

1. Know When to Change the Sand in Your Waterco Pool Filter

The first step in changing sand in your Waterco pool filter is to know when to change it. Ideally, you should change the sand in your pool filter every 3-5 years. However, certain factors could reduce or increase the lifespan of the sand. For instance, if you live in an area with a high concentration of minerals in the water, the sand might wear out faster. Similarly, if you have pets that frequently splash around in the pool, the sand might get clogged sooner. Therefore, it is important to keep an eye on the pressure gauge of your pool filter. If the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above the normal operating pressure, it is time to change the sand.

2. Gather the Required Supplies

Before you start the process of changing sand in your Waterco pool filter, gather all the required supplies. These include a wrench, a screwdriver, a small cup or scoop, some Teflon tape, and a new bag of 20-grade silica sand.

3. Turn Off the Power

The next step is to turn off the power supply to your pool. This will ensure your safety while working on the pool filter. Start by switching off the circuit breaker that powers the pool equipment. If you’re not sure which circuit breaker controls the pool equipment, you can always turn off the main breaker. Make sure to lock it to prevent anyone from accidentally turning it back on while you’re working.

4. Release the Pressure from the Pool Filter

After turning off the power supply, release the pressure from the pool filter. Start by opening the air relief valve on the top of the filter tank. This will allow the air to escape and release the pressure from the filter. Once the pressure is released, you can remove the drain plug from the bottom of the filter tank to allow the water to drain out.

5. Remove the Multiport Valve

The next step is to remove the multiport valve from the top of the pool filter. Use a wrench to unscrew the bolts that hold the valve in place, and carefully lift it off the filter. Make sure to keep the valve upright to avoid any damage to the gasket.

6. Remove the Old Sand

After removing the multiport valve, use a small cup or scoop to remove the old sand from the filter tank. Start by scooping out the top layer of sand and gradually work your way down. Make sure to dispose of the old sand as per local regulations.

7. Clean the Filter Tank

Once all the old sand is removed, clean the filter tank with water to remove any debris or contaminants. Check the laterals at the bottom of the filter and replace any broken ones if needed.

8. Add New Sand

After cleaning the filter tank, it is time to add new sand. Use a funnel or scoop to add the new sand into the filter tank. Make sure to pour it slowly to avoid damaging the laterals. Fill the tank up to about 2/3 level before turning off the water supply.

9. Reassemble the Multiport Valve

After adding the new sand, reassemble the multiport valve back onto the top of the filter tank. Apply some Teflon tape to the valve threads to ensure a leak-free seal. Tighten the bolts that hold the valve in place using a wrench.

10. Turn On the Power

After reassembling the multiport valve, it is time to turn on the power supply to your pool. Start by turning on the circuit breaker that controls the pool equipment. Switch on the filter pump and let it run for a few minutes to ensure that the sand settles down.

In conclusion, changing sand in your Waterco pool filter is a simple process that can be done with a few basic tools. By following the steps mentioned above, you can ensure that your pool filter is working efficiently and providing clean and clear water. Remember to replace the sand every 3-5 years and perform regular maintenance to extend the life of your pool filter.
