how to change sand in pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Introduction:

In order to keep your pool crystal clear and free from impurities, it is essential that you change the sand in your pool filter regularly. The filter is responsible for trapping small particles and impurities that your pool water may have. Over time, the sand in your pool filter can become clogged with dirt and debris, which reduces the efficiency of the filter. Changing the sand in your pool filter may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite easy if you follow the right steps. In this article, we will discuss how to change sand in pool filter in easy steps.

1. Understanding the Different Types of Pool Filters:

There are three main types of pool filters: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. For changing sand in pool filter, we will focus on sand filters. Sand filters are the most common type of pool filter and are relatively easy to maintain. They work by passing water through a layer of sand, which traps small particles and impurities. Sand Filters are also the most affordable option available in the market.

2. Preparing to Change the Sand in Your Pool Filter:

Before you start changing the sand in your pool filter, you need to turn off the pool pump and drain the system. Use a screwdriver to remove the pump lid and drain plug from the system. Be sure to check your pool equipment manual for specific instructions for your model. Have your sand, teflon tape, and filter cleaner ready to go. Using a shop-vac or pool blower, blow all debris out from the top of the sand in your pool filter tank.

3. Removing the Old Sand from Your Pool Filter:

To remove the old sand, you will first need to unscrew the Multiport Valve’s clamp band that is located on the top side of the sand filter. Once you remove the valve, use a garden hose to wash out the sand filter. You don’t need to get every last grain of sand out, but most of it. It is better to do this outside of the tank by having a helper hold a large trash bag under the valve. The sand will pour out leaving the inside of the filter essentially clean.

4. Adding New Sand to Your Pool Filter:

Add new pool filter sand to the tank by pouring it gently through a funnel to cover the laterals in the bottom. A 5 gallon bucket works well for adding sand to the filter once the laterals have been covered. Fill the filter tank about half-way with water to cushion the new sand and then finish pouring in the sand until the tank fill line.

5. Reassembling the Pool Filter and Testing the Water:

After adding new sand, you should reassemble the Multiport Valve to the sand filter tank. Check that the valve’s gasket is on correctly and then tighten the clamp band slowly to secure it back in place. After everything is secure, add water to the pool to the level recommended in your pool equipment manual. Assemble the pool’s pump and filters back together. Turn on the pool pump and run for a full cycle. This will re-prime the system and get any remaining air out. After priming the pump, you will need to backwash the pool filter a few times until the water runs clear.

Conclusion:

Changing the sand in your pool filter is an essential maintenance procedure that should be done at least once a year. By following these easy steps, you can ensure your pool is always sparkling clean and free of impurities. If you experience any issues, or if you are unsure about how to change sand in pool filter, call the professionals to come out and assist you. A properly operating pool filter system will provide a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for you and your family all summer long!
