How to Change Sand in Jandy Pool Filter

Swimming pools are wonderful outdoor additions and provide opportunities for people to relax and have fun. However, like any other part of the home, they require routine maintenance to function at their best. One of the most critical elements of pool maintenance is the pool filter. Jandy pool filters, in particular, require proper care to ensure the pool stays clean and safe to use. Over time and with usage, the sand in the pool filter can become contaminated and reduce its filtration efficiency, which means it's time to change the sand. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to change sand in a Jandy pool filter.

What You Need:

- New pool filter sand

- Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers

- Hose

- Vac hose adapter

- Large plastic bags (as many as needed to cover the sand)

- Towel

- Wrench

- Pool Filter Multiport Valve

Step 1: Turn Off Power and Water Supply

Before starting any maintenance on your pool filter, ensure the power supply is turned off. If your filter has an on/off switch, switch it off. If not, turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Next, turn off the water supply to the filter. This step is essential to prevent any accidents and to make sure you don't get wet.

Step 2: Remove Multiport Valve

The multiport valve is situated on top of the filter head and needs to be removed. Do this by using a wrench to loosen and remove the bolts holding the valve in place. Once you remove the bolts, twist and pull the valve out of the filter head carefully. Ensure that you mark the hoses leading to the valve to indicate where each hose was connected.

Step 3: Remove Old Sand

After removing the multiport valve, it's time to remove the old sand. To do this, use a towel or a plastic bag to cover the drain pipe leading to the filter. This prevents sand from clogging drain pipes. Using a screwdriver, carefully scrape off the old sand or vacuum it out. If you're using a vacuum, connect the hose to the vacuum adapter and insert it into the filter head. Slowly vacuum the sand into the adapter, preventing the hose from going too deep or hitting the laterals at the bottom of the filter.

Step 4: Inspect the Laterals

Once the old sand has been removed, you can now inspect the laterals at the bottom of the filter. Check for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks or breakage. If any of the laterals are damaged, replace them with new ones.

Step 5: Add New Sand

Now that the old sand is out and the laterals are in good condition, it's time to add new sand. Ensure that you use the correct amount of sand recommended for your filter. Jandy pool filters require between 250 and 500 pounds of sand, depending on the model. Pour the sand into the filter, keeping the laterals in their designated positions. Once done, use your hand to smooth out the sand, making sure it's level.

Step 6: Reinstall the Multiport Valve

Now that the new sand is in, it's time to reinstall the multiport valve. Ensure that the valve's o-rings are in place and screwed in tightly using the bolts you removed earlier. Reconnect the hoses to their designated positions by following the markings made earlier. Ensure all connections are tight.

Step 7: Prime the Pump and Check for Leaks

After installing the multiport valve, turn the power back on, and start the pump. Ensure that you prime the pump before turning it on by filling it up with water. Check for any leaks, especially around the multiport valve and at the filter head. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections or replace any damaged parts.

Conclusion

Changing the sand in your Jandy pool filter may seem daunting, but it's a routine maintenance task that can improve your pool's overall performance. Ensure that you follow the seven steps outlined above, and remember to wear protective gear when handling the sand. With proper care and maintenance, your Jandy pool filter will continue to provide you with clean and safe swimming water for years to come.

Fiberglass vessels have a mechanical and chemical resistance superior to steel . Fiberglass tanks do not rust or corrode and are able to withstand damage from many types of water treatment chemicals.
