how to change sand in a pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

.

Pool filters play an important role in keeping the pool water clean and clear. Over time, the sand in the filter can become clogged and dirty, reducing its efficiency. Regularly changing the sand in your pool filter can help ensure that it works properly and keeps your pool sparkling clean. Here's how to change the sand in a pool filter.

1. Gather necessary equipment and materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials. You'll need a new bag of pool filter sand, a Phillips head screwdriver, a shop vac or hose, a socket wrench, and Teflon tape.

2. Turn off the power and drain the filter tank

Make sure that the electrical power to the pool pump and filter are turned off. Then, turn the multiport valve to the "backwash" position or "waste" position if there's a specific waste outlet for your pool. This will allow water to drain out of the filter tank.

3. Remove the filter tank from the piping

Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts connecting the filter tank to the piping. At this point, you should be able to lift the filter tank out of its housing.

4. Remove the old sand

Using a shop vac or hose, carefully remove all the sand from inside the filter tank. Be sure to dispose of it properly.

5. Inspect the laterals and replace if necessary

Carefully inspect the filter laterals at the bottom of the tank. Over time, these plastic tubes can become brittle and break. If you notice any damage, replace them.

6. Add new sand

Slowly and carefully add new sand to the filter tank. Do not overfill the tank, as this can cause the sand to become too compacted and reduce its efficiency.

7. Reassemble the filter

Replace any gaskets or o-rings, and use Teflon tape on all threads to ensure a tight seal. Once everything is in place, reattach the filter tank to the piping and tighten the bolts with a socket wrench.

8. Backwash and run the filter

Turn the multiport valve to the "backwash" position and allow water to flow through the filter for several minutes. Then, turn the valve to the "rinse" position and run the filter for a few more minutes. This will help remove any residual sand and debris from the system. Finally, turn the valve to the "filter" position and turn the power back on to the pump and filter.

9. Monitor the filter pressure

Keep an eye on the pressure gauge on the filter. If the pressure is too high, it may indicate that there is still some blockage in the system. If the pressure is too low, it may mean that there is not enough sand in the filter.

10. Enjoy a clean pool!

With a fresh load of clean sand in your pool filter, your pool water should be crystal clear and free of debris. Regularly changing the sand in your pool filter is a simple but important task that can help keep your pool healthy and enjoyable all season long.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
