how to change out sand in pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

In order to keep your swimming pool crystal clear, it's essential to maintain the sand in the pool filter. Sand filters are one of the most popular types of pool filters as they are cost-effective and do an excellent job of capturing debris from the water. Here are the steps to follow when it's time to change out the sand in your pool filter.

Step 1: Turn off the Pool Pump

Before you begin working on your pool filter, turn off the pool pump. This will prevent water from flowing back into the pool and help safeguard your health and safety.

Step 2: Release the Pressure

Next, you'll want to release the pressure inside the pool filter to make the sand removal process easier. Locate the air relief valve on the filter tank and open it carefully until water comes out.

Step 3: Drain the Water

Disconnect the filter from the pool pump and drain the water. You can do this by turning the valve that controls the water flow. Next, you'll need to remove the drain plug or cap at the bottom of the filter to allow any remaining water to flow out.

Step 4: Remove the Filter's Cover

Using a wrench, remove any bolts or clamps holding the filter head in place. Once the bolts are removed, you should be able to lift off the cover.

Step 5: Remove the Old Sand

The old sand is now exposed and ready to be removed. Use a scoop or a vacuum to remove the sand and debris. Keep in mind that sand can be heavy, so you might need some help to lift the filter from the ground.

Step 6: Clean the Tank

Once the sand has been removed, use a garden hose to rinse out the tank. Scrub the interior walls of the filter with a soft-bristled brush to remove any remaining debris.

Step 7: Add New Sand

Before adding new sand, ensure you know the correct sand type to use for your filter. Use a scoop to add the new sand slowly and evenly into the filter tank. Ensure you avoid leaving any air pockets in the sand.

Step 8: Reattach the Cover

Once the new sand is added, reattach the cover and reassemble the filter head on top of the tank. Tighten the bolts or clamps securely to hold the filter head in place.

Step 9: Backwash

Next, it's time to backwash the filter. This is an essential step to remove any debris from the sand that may have been missed during the cleaning process. Circulate clean water through the filter for a couple of minutes until the water runs clear.

Step 10: Return to Normal Operation

Finally, return your pool filter to normal operation by reconnecting the filter to the pool pump. Turn on the pool pump and allow the pool water to flow through the filter.

In conclusion, changing out the sand in your pool filter can seem like a daunting task, but by following the above steps, you can keep your pool filter running in optimal condition. With regular maintenance and cleaning, your pool filter system will last for many years to come.
