If you own a pool or spa, it’s essential to ensure that it is always functioning at its best. One crucial element of pool maintenance is having a clean and functioning filtration system. However, over time, your pool filter might fail to function correctly. If this happens, it is often due to a damaged spider gasket, a small but vital component of the pool filter that can cause leaks if damaged.

If you are facing this issue or wish to keep your filtration system running efficiently, replacing the spider gasket is an easy DIY task. In this article, we will take you through the necessary steps for changing a spider gasket on a pool filter.

What is a spider gasket and why does it need changing?

A spider gasket is a plastic or rubber circular piece that sits in between the valve and the filter tank in multi-port valve pool filters. It has eight arms, which control the key filter functions, including backwashing, recirculating, filtering, and rinsing.

Over time, the spider gasket can become worn or brittle due to age, exposure to chemicals, and high temperatures. If you notice water leaking from the filter head or backwash valve when the system is running, it may indicate that the spider gasket is damaged and needs replacing.

Essential tools you will need for replacing the spider gasket

Before proceeding with the replacement, make sure to obtain the necessary tools, including a screwdriver, a new spider gasket, Teflon tape, and a soft-bristled brush for cleaning. A flashlight and a camera may also come in handy when trying to identify the spider gasket's orientation when putting it back in place.

The step-by-step process of changing a spider gasket on a pool filter

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump and filter system.

Before embarking on any maintenance procedure, always turn off the equipment to avoid injury and avoid further damage.

Step 2: Remove the multi-port valve from the filter tank.

To access the spider gasket, remove the screws that attach the multi-port valve to the filter tank. You may need to use a wrench or pliers to break any mineral buildup that may have locked the screws in place.

Step 3: Remove the damaged spider gasket.

With the multi-port valve removed from the tank, you can now access the spider gasket. Carefully remove the old gasket from its position, taking note of its orientation before removing it.

Step 4: Clean the valve and tank seat.

Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any debris, deposits, and dirt from the valve body and tank seat. Check the tank seat for any cracks or damages and replace if necessary.

Step 5: Install the new spider gasket.

Insert the new spider gasket in its position and ensure that it is inserted in the correct orientation. Use Teflon tape around the port 'O’-ring to avoid leaks.

Step 6: Reattach the multi-port valve to the tank.

Screw the multi-port valve back to the filter tank and ensure that it is tightly in place.

Step 7: Test the system.

Turn on the pool pump and observe the filter's operation, including backwashing and rinsing. Check for any leaks around the valve body or tank, and if everything is running smoothly, enjoy your clean pool water!

Common mistakes to avoid during the spider gasket replacement process

The most common mistake when changing the spider gasket is inserting it in the wrong direction, leading to leaks and decreased performance. Therefore, take photos before and during the process to avoid confusion later.

Another mistake to avoid is not replacing the spider gasket on time. It’s recommended to replace the gasket at least once each season to keep the filtration system working efficiently.

How often should you change the spider gasket on a pool filter?

Chlorine, heat, and age can decrease the spider gasket's durability, leading to damage over time. Therefore, it’s always better to schedule consistent upkeep and replacement, at least once per pool season.

In conclusion, by following the steps listed above, you can easily change the spider gasket of your pool filter without involving professional help. Ensuring the filtration system's efficiency is key to enjoying clean and hygienic pool water.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
---Poolking has a professional Quality Control team to guarantee each product is 100% inspected before packing.
