how to backwash a swimming pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Have you been noticing that your swimming pool is not as clean or clear as it used to be? This could be a sign that your filter is clogged and in need of backwashing. Backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water through the filter, flushing out any built-up dirt, debris, and contaminants, and restoring the filter's functionality. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to backwash your swimming pool filter:

1. Know when to backwash

One of the key signs that it's time to backwash your pool filter is when you notice that your pool isn't filtering the water properly. You may start to notice that the water is cloudy, that there's debris floating on the surface, or that the water flow is weak. If this is the case, you should check the pressure gauge on your pool filter - if the gauge is showing a pressure that's 8-10 psi higher than its normal reading, it's time to backwash.

2. Turn off your pool pump

Before you start the backwashing process, you need to turn off your pool pump. This will prevent any water from flowing into the filter while you're working on it.

3. Turn the valve to backwash

Next, you'll need to turn the valve on your pool filter to the backwash position. This will allow water to flow backwards through the filter, flushing out any dirt and debris that has accumulated.

4. Turn on your pump and let it run

Once the valve has been turned to the backwash position, you can turn your pump back on and let it run for 2-3 minutes. During this time, dirty water will be flushed out of the filter and into a designated waste area.

5. Rinse the filter

After backwashing, it's important to rinse the filter to get rid of any remaining debris. To do this, turn off the pump and turn the valve to the “rinse” position. Turn the pump back on and let it run for another 1-2 minutes, allowing clean water to flow through the filter and flush out any remaining debris.

6. Resume normal operation

Once you've completed the backwashing process and rinse, you can turn the valve back to the “filter” position and turn your pump back on. Your pool filter should now be clean and functioning properly.

In conclusion, backwashing is an important maintenance task that should be performed regularly to keep your pool filter working properly. By following these steps on how to backwash your swimming pool filter, you can ensure that your pool stays clean and clear all season long.
