how to backwash a saltwater pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

As a pool owner, regularly maintaining your pool is crucial to keeping it clean and functioning properly. One essential task is backwashing your pool filter, especially if you have a saltwater pool. In this article, we will guide you through the steps of backwashing a saltwater pool filter.

What is Backwashing?

Backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water through the pool filter, dislodging and flushing out trapped debris, dirt, and other particles. This is essential to ensure that your pool filter continues to work efficiently and maintain clear pool water.

Why is Backwashing important for a Saltwater Pool?

Saltwater pools use a salt-chlorine generator to produce chlorine, which means that the salt level in the water is higher than in a traditional chlorine pool. This can cause mineral buildup in the pool filter, making it harder for water to flow through and increasing the need for backwashing.

When Should You Backwash Your Saltwater Pool Filter?

It is recommended to backwash your saltwater pool filter once a month or when you notice an increase in pressure on the filter gauge. A high pressure reading indicates that the filter is clogged with debris and needs to be backwashed.

How to Backwash a Saltwater Pool Filter: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Turn off the Pool Pump

Before starting the backwashing process, ensure that the pool pump is turned off to prevent any potential damage to the equipment.

Step 2: Choose the Right Backwash Setting

Locate the multiport valve on your pool filter and turn it to the backwash setting. This is usually marked with an arrow pointing towards the waste pipe.

Step 3: Attach the Backwash Hose

Attach the backwash hose to the waste pipe and turn on the pump. Make sure that the hose is firmly secured to prevent any leaks.

Step 4: Backwash

Allow the pump to run for 2-3 minutes or until the water in the backwash hose is clear. This indicates that all the debris and particles have been flushed out of the filter.

Step 5: Rinse

Turn off the pump and switch the multiport valve to the rinse setting. This will flush out any remaining debris from the filter. Allow the pump to run for 1-2 minutes or until the water in the sight glass of the filter is clear.

Step 6: Return to Filter Setting

Turn off the pump and switch the multiport valve back to the filter setting. Ensure that the valve is securely in place to prevent any leaks.

Step 7: Turn on the Pump

Finally, turn on the pool pump and allow it to run normally.

Conclusion:

Backwashing your saltwater pool filter is an essential maintenance task that should not be overlooked. By following these simple steps, you can keep your pool filter working efficiently and ensure that your pool water stays clear and safe for swimming. Remember to keep to a regular backwashing schedule to prevent any potential damage to your pool equipment.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
