how often does the pool pump have to run

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

If you own a swimming pool, then you know how important it is to keep the water clean and well-circulated. A pool pump is an essential tool that helps to maintain pool water hygiene and balance by filtering out debris and chemicals. But the question is, how often should you run the pool pump to keep it functioning efficiently? In this article, we will try to answer this question and give you a better understanding of your pool pump.

Understanding the Pool Pump

Before diving into how long your pool pump should run, it’s crucial to have a basic understanding of the pump itself. A pool pump is a mechanical device that circulates water in and out of the pool, filtering and sanitizing it to maintain hygienic conditions. It works in tandem with a filter to remove dirt and other debris.

How Often Should You Run the Pool Pump?

1. The Six Hour Rule

One of the most common recommendations for how often to run your pool pump is the six-hour rule. This rule suggests running the pool pump for six hours a day in the summer months when the pool is most active, and three hours a day during winter months, when the pool sees less usage. During monsoon or other periods of heavy rain, the pool pump should also run for six hours a day to prevent sediment buildup.

2. The One Degree Fahrenheit Per Hour Rule

Another general rule of thumb is to run your pool pump for one degree Fahrenheit of temperature increase per hour. For example, if your pool is at 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and you want to heat it to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, you would need to run the pool pump for ten hours each day.

3. Pool Size

The size of your pool also plays a role in how long you should run your pool pump. Larger pools may require more time to circulate water effectively, while smaller ones may need less. As a general rule, you should aim to circulate your pool water at least once every 24 hours.

4. Pump Size

The pump size is another factor that can affect how long you should run your pool pump. Larger pumps can circulate the water more efficiently, meaning you may need to run them for a shorter amount of time to achieve the same results as a smaller pump. Check with your pool professional to ensure that your pump size is appropriate for your pool.

5. Jet and Water Features

If your pool has water features or jets, these can increase the amount of time your pool pump needs to run. These features require additional water circulation to function correctly, so you will need to adjust the pump runtime accordingly.

Benefits of Running Your Pool Pump

Running your pool pump for the right amount of time has numerous benefits, including:

- Keeping the pool water clean and hygienic

- Filtering dirt and other debris that can harm the pool’s structure

- Preventing algae growth by circulating pool water effectively

- Increasing the efficiency of your pool’s chemical treatments

- Keeping the pool water cool in the summer months

Conclusion

In conclusion, how long you need to run your pool pump depends on various factors, such as the pool's size, pump size, water features, and temperature goals. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend running your pool pump for at least six hours a day during the summer months and three hours a day during the winter months. A pool professional can help you determine the optimal runtime requirements based on your pool’s specific needs. Ultimately, regular maintenance and upkeep are important to ensure your pool stays clean, healthy, and enjoyable for everyone who uses it.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
11. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump . Switch on the electric heater if any .
