how often do you clean pool filter balls

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

When it comes to maintaining a swimming pool, cleaning the filter is a crucial aspect of keeping the water clean and clear. Most pool owners are familiar with backwashing and replacing traditional pool filter cartridges, but what about pool filter balls? These innovative filtration devices have been gaining popularity in recent years, but how often should they be cleaned? In this article, we’ll take a closer look at pool filter balls and provide some tips on cleaning and maintaining them.

What are pool filter balls?

Pool filter balls are tiny, plastic spheres designed to replace traditional pool filter cartridges. Made from a polyethylene material, these balls are lightweight and easy to handle, making them an ideal alternative to heavy filter cartridges. They work by trapping dirt and debris within their fibrous structure, allowing only clean water to pass through. Unlike traditional cartridges that need to be cleaned and replaced often, pool filter balls can last for years with proper maintenance.

Why choose pool filter balls?

Besides being easy to manage, pool filter balls offer several advantages over traditional filter cartridges. For starters, pool filter balls require less water to clean than cartridges, making them an eco-friendly option. They’re also more cost-effective than cartridges since they don’t need to be replaced as often. Pool filter balls also offer superior filtration, trapping even the smallest particles in their fibrous structure.

How often should you clean pool filter balls?

One of the biggest perks of pool filter balls is that they require minimal maintenance. Unlike traditional cartridges that need to be cleaned or replaced weekly, pool filter balls can go for several months without needing attention. However, it’s important to monitor the water pressure in your pool. When the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi higher than the normal range, it’s time to clean your filter balls.

How to clean pool filter balls

Cleaning pool filter balls is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Step 1: Turn off the pool pump

Before starting any pool maintenance, turn off the pool pump to ensure your safety.

Step 2: Remove the filter ball container

Remove the filter ball container from the pool filter system. This may require unscrewing or loosening a clamp, depending on your specific system.

Step 3: Empty the filter balls

Empty the filter balls into a bucket or storage container. Be sure to wear gloves; the balls can be greasy and leave a residue on your hands.

Step 4: Rinse the filter balls

Rinse the filter balls with a garden hose or pressure washer. Be sure to remove all dirt and debris.

Step 5: Soak the filter balls

Soak the filter balls in a solution of one part muriatic acid to ten parts water for about ten minutes. Rinse the balls thoroughly with clean water afterward.

Step 6: Reassemble and restart the pool pump

Reassemble the filter ball container and restart the pool pump. Monitor the water pressure; if it’s still high after cleaning, you may need to replace some of the filter balls.

Conclusion

Pool filter balls are a low-maintenance, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to traditional pool filter cartridges. With proper cleaning and maintenance, pool filter balls can last for years, providing superior filtration without complicated upkeep. By monitoring water pressure and cleaning the filter balls every few months, you can enjoy a crystal-clear swimming pool all summer long.

----Yes, they can. Silica sand is mainly used for filtration, while activated carbon is mainly used for adsorption. Silica sand is effective for higher water quality requirements. When use them together, silica sand should be placed on the bottom layer, and then activated carbon should be filled on the sand, but the cost of using two media is much higher.
