Pool Filter Cartridges: How Often Should You Change Them?

Imagine you’re lounging in your backyard, looking at your sparkling clear pool, and suddenly, you notice the water isn’t looking as crystal clear as it usually does. You dread the thought of having to deal with the issue but know that something has to be done. The likely culprit could be your pool filter cartridge that needs to be replaced. Pool filter cartridges play a crucial role in keeping your pool clean, healthy, and enjoyable to swim in. But how often should you change them?

Understanding Pool Filter Cartridges

Before we dive into how often you should change your pool filter cartridges, it’s vital first to understand what they are and their functions in your pool filtration system. Pool filter cartridges are cylindrical-shaped, fiber-woven filters that trap dirt and debris as your pool water passes through them. The cleaner your filter cartridge is, the more efficiently it can work at filtering the water in your pool.

When Should You Replace Your Pool Filter Cartridge?

There are many factors to consider when determining how often you should replace your pool filter cartridge. Here are some guidelines that will give you everything you need to know about when to replace your pool filter cartridge:

1. Age of Your Cartridge

The first thing you should consider is the age of your pool filter cartridge. Most filter cartridges last an average of 2-3 years before they need replacement. However, if you've recently purchased your pool filter cartridge or it's relatively new, you don't need to worry about changing it just yet.

2. Frequency of Use

The frequency of use is another important factor that will determine how often you should change your pool filter cartridge. If you use your pool frequently, then you'll need to replace your pool filter cartridge more often. If you don't use your pool regularly, then you can wait longer before replacing the cartridge.

3. Water Quality

Water quality is another factor that determines how often you should replace your pool filter cartridge. If you have hard water or live in an area with high mineral content, you'll need to replace your pool filter cartridge more often. The same is true if you have unusually dirty pool water.

4. Pool Size

The size of your pool is another important factor that determines how often you should change your pool filter cartridge. If you have a large pool, you will need to replace your pool filter cartridge more often than someone with a smaller pool.

5. Brand of Pool Filter Cartridge

The last factor you should consider when determining how often you should replace your pool filter cartridge is the brand of the pool filter cartridge. Some brands manufacture pool filter cartridges that are more durable and require changing less frequently than others.

Conclusion

To sum it up, there is no one-size-fits-all answer as to how often you should change your pool filter cartridge. However, if you look out for the warning signs of a dirty or worn-out pool filter components, such as murky water, the pressure gauge reading, or the cartridge's visual appearance, you'll be able to know when it's time to change it. The best thing to do is to keep a regular maintenance routine, including cleaning or replacing the cartridge, to keep your pool healthy and sparkling clean throughout the year. If you are unsure of how to proceed, consult with a professional or your pool manufacturer to ensure you are doing the necessary steps to optimize your pool filtration system.

----It is best to replace the silica sand of sand filters every 1-2 years for the following reasons:
a During backwashing, the filtration bed volume will expand upwards by 1.2 to 1.3 times. The water flow will drive the filtration layer to flow up and down, causing the filtration material particles to collide with each other. Backwash will let the small sand evacuate.
b.Some silica sands will be welded when the acid and alkali are changed due to insufficient purity;
Therefore, the longer the time, the worse the filtering effect of the sand tank. Since backwashing will consume and take away some sand, we need to replace the sand in the sand tank within the specified period.
