how often do you change a pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Swimming pools are a marvelous investment for any homeowner. The luxury of having a large body of water in the backyard to swim, dive, and relax in is unmatched. But the upkeep of the pool is something that you need to keep up with regularly. One major aspect of pool maintenance is cleaning the filter. It's essential to know how often you should be cleaning or changing the filter to maintain your pool in excellent condition.

## Why You Should Clean/Change Your Pool Filter

Cleaning or changing the pool filter depends on how often the pool is being used. Suppose you're someone who uses the pool every day and all year round. In that case, it would be best if you cleaned or changed the pool filter more regularly than someone who navigates away from the pool during the colder months or uses the pool less frequently. Generally, you need to clean the pool filter every two weeks or sooner after visible debris appears.

The purpose of cleaning the pool filters is to keep the water free of impurities and therefore, keep the pool clean. The pool filter works to trap debris, dirt, oil, and other spoilage that could block the pool circulation and make the pump less efficient. A clogged or dirty pool filter system can trigger a low water flow rate, reducing the efficacy of chemicals added to the pool, making it a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, and other harmful microorganisms.

## Changes in Pool Usage Will Affect the Cleaning Cycle

As mentioned before, how often you need to clean your pool filter can be influenced by increased pool usage. This is because frequent use of the pool will result in more debris and contaminants that need filtering out. In this regard, you'll need to clean the filters more often to maintain their efficiency.

## Signs That It's Time to Clean or Change Your Pool Filters

If you're wondering when the right time to clean your pool filters is or when it's time to replace your pool filters, keep your eyes open for the following signs that it's time for a change or a cleaning.

### Increased Pool Cloudiness

When you notice that your pool has cloudy water, it's often a clear indication that there's more debris and dirt in the pool than there should be. The pool filter may not be doing its job properly if it's cloudy even if you've recently cleaned it.

### A High Pump Pressure

Your pool's pressure gauge can also reveal whether or not your pool filter needs cleaning. High pressures readings are an indication that the filters are clogged and need a cleaning, or it might be time to replace them entirely.

### Murky Water

If you've noticed that your pool now seems murkier than usual, that's another sign that the filter needs to be replaced or cleaned.

### Reduced Flow Rate

The common symptoms of slow water flow in the pool or reduced flow rates are frequently an indicator that your pool filter system requires a thorough cleaning.

### Dirt at the Pool Bottom

If dirt has started to collect at the bottom of your pool, even after you have vacuumed, that's another sign that the pool filter isn't doing its job properly.

## Conclusion

In conclusion, it is imperative that you know how to clean or change your pool filter to keep your pool healthy, clean, and safe to use all the time. If you've noticed any of the above signs, that means it's time to get the pool filter cleaned, replace it, or schedule for regular maintenance visits with professionals. Remember, a well-maintained pool will save you both money and time in the long run.
