how much pressure should my pool filter have

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Introduction:

Swimming pools require filtration systems to keep the water clean and sparkling. One of the most important aspects of a pool filtration system is the pressure. Maintaining the correct amount of pressure in your pool filter can be a little challenging. Many pool owners are unaware of how much pressure their pool filter should have. In this article, we will discuss the appropriate pressure range and factors that affect it.

What is Pool Filter Pressure?

Pool filter pressure is the measure of the force that water exerts on the filter system. It is typically measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). The system's pressure gauge shows this reading, and it helps to determine if the system is working. It is crucial to monitor the pool filter pressure because too low or too high pressure can cause issues with the system's efficiency.

What is the Appropriate Range of Pool Filter Pressure?

The appropriate pool filter pressure range depends on the type of filter you use. However, the ideal pressure should be between 10 and 20 PSI. If the pressure is outside the appropriate range, it indicates that there is a problem with the system. A high pressure reading shows that the filter is clogged and requires cleaning, while low pressure reading indicates that there is a malfunction in the system.

Factors that Impact Pool Filter Pressure:

Several factors can contribute to the pressure in the pool filtration system. Below are some of the significant factors that impact pool filter pressure:

1. Pool Size:

The size of your pool has a significant impact on the pool filter pressure. Large pools require more water circulation and filtration, which increases the pressure. To maintain the appropriate range of pressure, it is essential to choose the right filter size for your pool.

2. Type of Filter:

Different types of filters have different pressure requirements. For instance, sand filter systems require higher pressure levels than cartridge filters. Before installing a pool filter, it is essential to consider the type of filter and its recommended pressure range.

3. Filter Age:

The age of the filter also plays a role in the pool filter pressure. Older filters are typically clogged and require cleaning more often, which may cause an increase in the pool filter pressure.

4. Clogged or Dirty Filters:

Dirty or clogged filters can also impact the pressure in pool filtration systems. The filter media can become clogged with debris and dirt, resulting in reduced filter efficiency and increased pressure levels.

5. Pump Malfunction:

Pump malfunction can cause low pressure in the pool filtration system. It can be caused by several factors such as clogs in the impeller, a damaged impeller, or loose pump fittings.

Conclusion:

To ensure your swimming pool remains clean and sparkling, maintaining the appropriate pool filter pressure is essential. Regularly checking the filter pressure helps to detect any problem early, which reduces the cost of repairs. If you notice that the pressure is outside the appropriate range, it is important to troubleshoot the system immediately. In summary, we recommend that you always keep the pool filter pressure between 10 and 20 PSI.

Opening Hours
After about 5~10days ,or when the reading of the pressure gauge on the pump side of the filter has increased by about 0.2bars since the last backwash , backwash the filter as follows:
1. Stop the pump
2.Close the valves on the suction and return lines.
3.Open the cover of the pump and empty the filter gasket .
4.Refit the cover
5.Open the valve to the drain outlet
6.Turn the lever to BACKWASH
7. Open the valves to the suction and return lines.
8.Start the pump .Rinse the filter for about 1 to 2 minutes until the water in the sight glass is clear .
NOTE : Any electric heater must be off .
9. Stop the pump
10. Turn the lever to RINSE , start the pump and rinse for about 15~30 seconds. Stop the pump and turn the lever to FILTER . This is the normal operating position .
11. Close the drain outlet valve and start the pump . Switch on the electric heater if any .
a. Power failure or motor protection tripped
b. Pump doesn't vent
c. Pump doesn't fill the water
d. Suction line/hose leaking
e. Transparent cover not properly installed - check filter basket - even bolts
f . Inlet suction process is too large g.) Total resistance loss exceeds the allowable range of the pump - recalculate the required pressure
h. Mechanical shaft seal leakage
