If you're the proud owner of an above ground pool, you know that keeping it clean and properly maintained is essential to enjoying it throughout the swimming season. One of the most critical components of a well-functioning pool system is the filter. However, with so many options available on the market, it can be challenging to know where to start in your search for the right filter for your pool. This article will provide you with essential information on the cost, types, and maintenance of above ground pool filters.

The Importance of Investing in a Good Above Ground Pool Filter

You may think that the quality of the filter doesn't matter as long as you have one to remove debris and bacteria from the water. However, investing in a high-quality above ground pool filter can save you time and money in the long run. A good filter will circulate the water effectively, remove impurities, and extend the life of your pool pump, which is a significant investment in itself.

Understanding the Different Types of Filters for Above Ground Pools

There are three main types of filters for above ground pools: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. The type of filter you choose depends on the size of your pool, your budget, and your desired level of maintenance. Sand filters are the most affordable and require the least amount of maintenance. Cartridge filters are more expensive but have better filtration capabilities, while DE filters provide the best filtration but are the most expensive and require the most maintenance.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Above Ground Pool Filter

When selecting an above ground pool filter, there are several factors you need to consider. The size of your pool is probably the most crucial factor, as it will determine what size filter you need. You should also consider the amount of debris that enters your pool, the frequency of use, and your budget. It's always a good idea to buy a filter that's slightly larger than what you need, as this will reduce the wear and tear on your filter and make it more efficient.

How Much Should You Expect to Spend on an Above Ground Pool Filter?

The cost of an above ground pool filter varies widely depending on the type and size you choose. Sand filters are usually the most affordable, with prices ranging from $100 to $500. Cartridge filters can cost anywhere from $150 to $1000, while DE filters range from $300 to $1500. Keep in mind that you will also need to purchase other equipment, such as pump and hose, to complete the loop.

Maintenance Tips for Your Above Ground Pool Filter

Maintaining your above ground pool filter is essential for keeping your pool water clean and clear. Sand filters require the least amount of maintenance but should be backwashed regularly. Cartridge filters need to be cleaned every few weeks and replaced every few years. DE filters require the most maintenance, including backwashing, adding DE powder, and cleaning the filter plates. Regular maintenance will ensure your filter lasts longer, performs better, and saves you money in the long run.

Conclusion

A good above ground pool filter is an investment that will pay off in the long run. By choosing the right size, type, and quality, you will keep your pool water clean, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of your pool equipment. Remember to regularly maintain your filter and pump to ensure optimal performance and longevity. With the information provided in this article, you're now equipped to make an informed decision when choosing an above ground pool filter that meets your specific needs and budget.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
