how much does it cost to run pool filter

Author: Poolking - Swimming Pool Equipment Manufacturer

Swimming pools are an excellent source of recreation and relaxation, especially during the summer season. However, maintaining a pool is not an easy task. One crucial aspect of keeping a pool clean and safe for swimming is by operating a pool filter. It helps in removing debris and impurities from the water, leaving the pool sparkling and safe to swim in. In this article, we aim to discuss the cost of running a pool filter, which should give pool owners an idea of what to expect in terms of expenses.

The Initial Cost of a Pool Filter

The cost of a pool filter depends primarily on its size, brand, and type. There are three types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and D.E (diatomaceous earth). Generally, sand filters are the most affordable as they cost between $150 to $500, while cartridge filters range from $250 to $900. Meanwhile, DE filters are the most expensive, with prices ranging from $500 to $1,500. However, the cost of purchasing a pool filter is just the beginning.

Electricity Costs

The electricity cost of running a pool filter depends on various factors such as the type of pool filter, the size of the pool, the electricity rates, and the duration of operation per day. Typically, pool filter pumps are designed to run at least eight hours per day, although some may run for up to 24 hours.

According to Energy.gov, running a pool pump for eight hours daily can consume 3,000 watts. This translates to approximately $750 per year, assuming an electricity rate of $0.25/kWh. However, supposing that the pool filter is a high-efficiency variable speed pump, the electricity consumption is relatively lower, decreasing your expenses to about $190 per year.

Size Matters

The size of a pool is a significant factor that affects the cost of running a pool filter. One way to gauge the size of a pool filter is by estimating the gallons of water it has to filter. The larger the pool, the more water it has, and to keep it clean, it requires more electricity to pump that large amount of water through the filter. For example, a small pool of 10,000 gallons requires about one horsepower pump while a large pool of 30,000 gallons requires a two horsepower pump.

The Cost of Chemicals

Operating a pool filter is not the only cost associated with keeping a pool clean. It also requires chemicals to sanitize and balance the water chemistry for safe swimming. The cost of buying these chemicals varies depending on the chemical type, the pool size, and its frequency of use. Chlorine, for instance, costs about $3 to $5 per pound, and an average pool requires three to four pounds weekly. This means that you may have to budget around $700 to $900 annually for chlorine alone. Other chemicals such as alkalinity and pH adjusters may cost an additional $100 to $200 annually.

Maintenance Costs

Although pool filters are relatively low-maintenance appliances, they require periodic cleaning and replacement of some parts. For instance, Sand filters require replacing the sand once every five years, costing approximately $50 to $150. Cartridge filters require regular cleaning at least four times yearly, with each cartridge replacement cost averaging $40 to $80. D.E Filters require periodic backwashing to remain in good working order and may need to be cleaned at least annually.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the cost of running a pool filter depends on several factors such as electricity rates, the type of filter pump, the size of the pool, and the cost of chemicals and maintenance. As a pool owner, the best thing you can do is to invest in an efficient, high-performance pool filter pump that will save you money in the long run. Make sure to research and compare different brands before making your purchase decision to get a filter that provides excellent performance while being cost-effective.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to pool pumps. A pool pump that is too large can hinder filtration and can even damage a pool’s filter and/or heater. It is therefore very important to know the size of a pool before purchasing a pool pump. If there is additional equipment (such as water features) installed into the pool, it will have to be taken it into account when deciding what size pump is going to be purchased. The more equipment is installed into a pool, the more powerful the pump needs to be.
It is important to consult with a pool equipment expert, such as Poolking's Pumps, before buying a pool pump. The team at Poolking will be able to give our customers professional advice regarding the size of the pump they will need to purchase.
